02.08.09 | Cybraphon: Robots have feelings too

Cybraphon Demo Song from Cybraphon on Vimeo.

It could be said that the immediacy and anonymity of the web can cause web users (fans and haters) to post gushingly positive or crushingly negative comments about their heroes (or enemies) with little thought for the consequence. Do any of these users stop to ponder in what way their comments will be taken?

There’s one band, appearing at this year’s Edinburgh Art Festival, who play an emotional response to comments made about them via Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. This band is Cybraphon.

Cybraphon is actually a robot band housed in an antique wooden and glass cupboard. The mad scientists behind Cybraphon are Found Electronics, one of the spin-offs of Scottish twisted pop mavericks FOUND (along with Found Light).

Simon Kirby, Tommy Perman and Ziggy Campbell created Cybraphon using funding from New Media Scotland’s Alt-W fund. The robot band will be playing from 5th August until 5th September at the Inspace Gallery (Crichton Street, Edinburgh EH8 9AB). For a great technical behind the scenes report, read the gadget feature on Cybraphon in Wired Magazine. To learn all about Found Electronics’s autonomous emotional robot band, from inspiration to installation, visit the Cybraphon website.

Radio Magnetic will be visiting the Inspace Gallery to hear the robots first hand. We recommend that you do too. In the meantime, watch this demo video (above) to catch Cybraphon in action.
