Last night the Mercury Music Prize was awarded to Indie rockers Elbow to a hail of cheers from the ceremony but mixed reactions from the Radio Magnetic office.

Elbow clinched the award, beating rival favourites Radiohead and Burial to take the £20,000 cash prize and seemingly weighty gong. Elbow frontman Guy Garvey recently announced that the band will be giving the trophy to Mandy Glancy, the mother of Garvey’s late best mate Bryan Glancy. The singer commented “You don’t get any more seldom seen than when you’re not alive any more, and I think he would have appreciated the gallows humour in that”. He continued by saying “that very heavy trophy there is going to be sat on Mandy Glancy’s mantelpiece, his mum, because she’s a particularly amazing lady.”.

‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ topped the list of albums from a host of particularly impressive talent at this years Mercury Music Prize which saw live performances on the night by most of the contenders apart from hot favourite Burial who never showed at the award ceremony. Rumours are abound about his reasoning for not showing up and the possibility that it may have harmed his influence on the final round of judging at the ceremony.

Personally I’m gutted that Radiohead never won after being shortlisted for the 5th time at the Mercuries and especially since ‘In Rainbows’ is arguably their best piece of work. Disappointed again but at least I never rushed to the bookies like everyone else.

If you missed the announcement the awards ceremony is repeated at 11:30pm on BBC2 this Friday. Well worth catching even if Burial didn’t turn up.
