Post rock band Mogwai are to return to Scotland after their drummer was rushed to hospital. The Glaswegian band have cut short their American tour after drummer, Martin Bulloch, was suffering from heart problems. The skin around his pace maker had broken, becoming infected.

Bulloch, who has an ongoing heart condition, was urged by doctors to return to Scotland to seek additional treatment from medics.

But the news has left thousands of US and Canadian fans in the lurch, after the Weigie band were forced to cancel the North American leg of their tour.

A statement on the band’s website reads: “We are sad to announce that we have had to cancel our remaining American and Canadian shows due to ill health.

“Our other dates in Europe and Japan will be going ahead as planned. We will re-schedule the shows in 2009″.

Drummer, Martin is gutted he had to cancel the dates.

He said: “I’d been having some problems with my pacemaker for the duration of the tour and it unfortunately culminated in me being sent to the emergency room.

“I was taken into hospital last night almost immediately after the show at ATP and the doctors initially thought I would have to have corrective surgery at a larger hospital nearer NYC.

“I’m really bummed about having to go home and feel for the folk who had bought tickets for our upcoming shows but I can honestly say it would be almost impossible for me to carry on at this point as my pacemaker has broken skin and the surrounding area has become infected. ”

“However, I have been given the all clear to travel home on the understanding that i go straight to my cardiologist on arrival back in Scotland.”

The band will go ahead with their European dates as planned, which start on the 21st October in Edinburgh, with with fellow Glaswegian band, The Twilight Sad.

  1. ………after the Weigie band were forced to cancel the North American leg of their tour.

    1. The band are from Edinburgh
    2. Wedgie is a derogatory term.

    Well done!

  2. That’s funny. I’m pretty sure that:

    1. Mogwai are from Glasgow.
    2. Wedgie means getting your pants pulled up your ass crack.

    Well done!

  3. 1. Google search Mogwai

    2. This is an interesting point. I wouldn’t consider it to be derogatory since it is an abreviation of Glaswegian but what do our readers think?

If it’s decided that weedgie, wedgie or weegie are offensive to those from Glasgow then we’ll never utter them again on these pages.

But if it’s all just a bit of colloquial fun then there’s no harm done and I’m still a filthy weedgie.

  4. Mr. Hendersom,

I think it’s great that you felt moved to comment on this piece but I do find your response somewhat dispassionate. I’ve got to say that while accuracy and integrity is of the up-most importance to any blog, journal, magazine, radio or TV station, etc., what moves me most about this piece is Martin Bulloch’s ill health.

Mogwai used to rehearse in the old Radio Magnetic studio. In Glasgow.

I hope Martin makes a speedy recovery. Best wishes to him, his family and the rest of the band.
