This event, which takes place at The Hub, Glasgow, will discuss and debate how labels, publishers, managers, media, brands and artists themselves can utilise new online platforms and internet revenue models as well as social media, digital marketing agencies and brands. The event will also explore new ways to work together to ensure that money can be made from one of the most important and ubiquitous creative artforms and cultural exports this country has.

The Music Business Innovation convention will evaluate the opportunities and challenges made by new technologies through a series of sector specific round-table discussions and workshops from 3.30pm until 5.00pm. Registration for the main event follows at 5.30pm.

In the evening, starting at 6 pm, this event will bring together leading music industry speakers including Simon Wheeler of Beggars Group, Steve Purdham from We7, Will Page from PRS For Music and Frukt‘s Jack Fryer to evaluate the opportunities for the music sector going forward. Talks will be followed by an open panel industry debate, with audience Q&A, elaborating on issues raised from prior discussions and presentations. Joining these four on the panel discussion we have Giles Lamb from Savalas, Dougal Perman from the SMIA and Radio Magnetic, Greg Kane from the SMIA and Hue and Cry and music law and business affairs consultant Murray Buchanan.

Between 3.30pm and 5.00pm, in the afternoon, prior to the main speakers and the panel discussion, Music Business Innovation will facilitate round table discussions and workshops on five key industry areas. These sector specific sessions will last approximately 90 mins and are:

Media and Music Discussion, hosted by Andy McColgan (Radio Magnetic):

Broadcasters, producers, publishers and bloggers will talk about how they work with music and assess opportunities for collaboration and suggest ideas on how to overcome challenges.

Record Label Innovation Discussion, hosted by Stephen Hume (The Tolbooth) and supported by Simon Hopkins (Creative Industries KTN):

Legal downloads don’t make up for declining CD sales but there are opportunities in licensing recordings and for selling physical merchandise and products. Can labels work together to increase revenues? How can they work better with other sectors of the industry?

Music Management Workshop, hosted by John Williamson (Belle and Sebastian manager):

Aspiring band managers can take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn from a leading industry music management expert in this workshop.

Licensing Opportunities Workshop, hosted by Duncan McCrone (PRS for Music):

Songwriters and publishers making music, and everyone using music, will discuss the opportunities available in exploiting music rights, both on and offline.

Social Media and Music Workshop, hosted by Greg Kane (Hue & Cry):

Hue & Cry have built a strong relationship with fans via social networks which they are able to monetise via online tools and offline activities. Greg will discuss social media strategies and tactics with musicians.

  5. Hi Scott,

That’s a shame you can’t make the event. The good news is – Yes, we’ll be documenting the whole event. The individual workshops and round-table discussions during the day will be audio podcasted and we’re going to be filming the main speakers, panel event and interviewing some of the attendees, speakers and those involved with the event in general.

All of this will be online in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on Radio Magnetic for all of this. Should be captivating and informative content for anyone with an interest in the music industry in Scotland and beyond.

    Best
    Andy
