15.10.08 | Streets New Album Criticised

The Streets’ Mike Skinner has revealed that he has taken bad reviews for his latest album very personally, as well he might, and lamented the fact that people don’t what him to stray from the sound of his debut album, ‘Original Pirate Material’. However, he added that he’s already writing songs for the next Streets album, which sound a bit like his debut album, ‘Original Pirate Material’.

Writing on his blog, Skinner said: “I don’t think people realise how upsetting it is to be constantly told how great your first album is and how less so the others are. It hurts, bad. The first album came from a place of pure creation. I have always replicated that with every album. A place of pure creation. A fresh start. I apologise to all the people for not making ‘OPM’ again, I really do. But I am an artist and if you only love that one album then please don’t listen to the others. I’m just trying to push things forward. I really am”.

He added: “The new album lyrics are flowing out. I’m writing a page every morning. The beats are fast. For all the OPM lovers it could come close”.

However, the next day he followed the post up by apologising for sounding like he was feeling sorry for himself. He said: “I felt quite guilty reading all the comments from yesterday. Whenever you read Lily Allen’s blog and she’s moaning about some bullshit paparazzi bollocks it makes me think, ‘Just fucking stop causing such good stories for them to write about and it’ll all go away’. Then I read the comments and I think ‘For God’s sake people don’t, you get it? She wants the photographers following her round. She needs it’. Anyway, I felt like my comments were a bit sorry for myself and that’s not how I’m going down. I was just saying it because I put the focus into the stories that I write and it’s like films (something which Lily’s mother knows a lot about being a movie producer) sometimes what I write doesn’t come off, but it’s never boring!”
