Homeclubbing Party With Phuturelabs, B-Movie Junkies And More

We thought it was about time we put another party on for you people, so get yourselves along to The Admiral, Waterloo St, Glasgow on Friday 10 September if you’d like to join us. From 11pm – 3am (£4).

Top of the bill we have the lovely gents that run the estimable Phuturelabs.com blog and who also showcase their tastes on a monthly Radio Magnetic podcast. These lads know modern electronic music inside out and know how to get a party rocking. Check ‘em out a week before they launch their very own record label at The Ivy.

The Radio Magnetic Soundsystem and Davie from One Louder will also be providing some help on the wheels of steel and there may even be a special guest slot or two. Check out One Louder‘s podcast for RM too.

We also have a live band in the shape of up and coming, disco-punk soulsters B-Movie Junkies. We’ve caught a handful of this band’s recent gigs and they are destined for big things. Believe us.

Jim Gellatly Nominated For The BT Digital Music Awards

We are delighted to announce that our weekly podcast, Jim Gellatly’s New Music has been nominated for the annual BT: Digital Music Awards in the Best Radio Show or Podcast category. Go Gellatly!

The show which has been a regular fixture on Radio Magnetic since 2007 champions and celebrates the best new music coming out of Scotland every week. With regular interviews, sessions, gig and festival reports all bound together with Jim’s personable and fun-lovingly professional demeanour and style.

Jim’s podcast has been nominated alongside UK podcast heavyweights like Adam and Joe’s 6 Music show, Adam Buxton’s Big Mixtape (also on BBC 6 Music), Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 Podcast, Chris Coco’s Melodica show and the Scouting For Girls Podcast.

As part of their Celebration of Curation month in August, Mixcloud asked some of their favourite contributors to put together a mix showcasing what they’re all about.

Radio Magnetic were delighted to be included alongside the likes of DJ History, Fabric, Dazed Digital, Fact Magazine, Vice Mag, XLR8R and Discobelle amongst notable others. We love the service Mixcloud provide and felt we were in good company with this one, helping them celebrate their first birthday in fine musical style. Deep Cover Launches at Stereo, Glasgow

New night from the brains behind Radio Magnetic’s Broken Ear show, Deep Cover kick starts this Friday 6 August at Stereo in Glasgow.

Its a mad world out there, and we all need a bit of shelter from the streets of Glasgow from time to time.

Nestled down an alley in the centre of town sits Stereo, a cozy li’l spot for vegetarians, students and those few looking for music that’s a bit out of the norm. Head down there this Friday and you’ll find Deep Cover, the club that acts like a pub, playing music ranging from afro-beat, (and other styles fitting in the ‘World’ category) to Garage rock, to modern lo-fi tunes- if you’ve heard RM’s Broken Ear then you might have an idea of what to expect. You’ll find the venue to be more homely than when you went last, with seating, extra decour and projections.

There’s also live music from Phat Trophies, a wurlitzer/drums duo, and Tokamak, once described as “a skint version of Battles”. And good time tunes all night long. So get down at 11pm when the doors open to kick start your weekend the right way.

RM Soundsystem: This Friday At The Ivy

This Friday 6 August, the Radio Magnetic Soundsystem will be providing the musical backdrop as you enjoy the start of a fantastic weekend, at The Ivy, in Glasgow’s Finnieston. Expect the hear some of the finest new music known to humanity.

From 8pm until late pm, the team will DJ and delight your ears with a selection of their favourite new releases of the last six months and they may even get their classics out too.

The Ivy is one of our favourite bars in the city and has enough of a range of exotic and obscure alcoholic beverages to make even the most hardened mixologist sit up and take note. AND they also serve pints. Add to this an excellent and affordable bar menu, wonderful staff and our tunes and you have all the merry makings of a great Friday night.

Mixcloud present a Celebration Of Curation to mark their first birthday.

To celebrate their first year online, the pleasant people over at Mixcloud HQ have asked us to be part of their Celebration Of Curation month.

For the month of August, each day will be curated by a different editorial voice from the UK music scene. We are honoured to be joining the likes of DJHistory, Red Bull Music Academy, FACT Magazine, Discobelle, Fabric, and Sunday Best to name but a handful of the fine musical representatives on show through the month of August. Mogwai Announce Live Album and DVD

Radio Magnetic family members Mogwai have announced the release date of their first ever live album. Famed for their amazing live shows, this latest release is a must for fans of the band both old and new.

‘Special Moves/Burning’ hits stores on Monday 23 August and includes a concert DVD filmed over 3 nights in early 2009. Directed by Vincent Moon (REM: Supernatural Superserious) and Nathanaël Le Scouarnec, the gig was filmed in New York’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. The album, recorded at these shows, features 11 classic tracks (17 on vinyl and download versions) including ‘I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead,’ ‘Mogwai Fear Satan’ and ‘Hunted By a Freak.’

AmbITion Scotland Getting Digital Roadshow South (Edinburgh)

On Thursday 10 June we’re taking part in a day of exploration, exposition, conversation and critical thinking around the online and digital opportunities for organisations today, new business models and audience development in the digital age at Edinburgh University.

The event is completely free and open to all arts organisations and individuals interested in digital development who would like to come along. Its going to be a very informative and enjoyable day and if you have an interest in the digital age in any respect and Inverness isn’t too far a treck we strongly recommend coming along. The workshop we’re presenting is called ‘Hands On Online Promotion’ and is a guide to using free online tools to benefit your organisation and reach new audiences and increase awareness of your cause.

The event at the Main Lecture Theatre, Chrystal McMillan Building, 15a George Square, at Edinburgh University lasts from 9:15am – 5.30pm (Live online evencast 9.40am – 12.30pm)

The day will also feature keynote speaker Bill Thompson, freelance writer and consultant who works with the BBC; case studies from Martin Reynolds and Faith Liddell of Festivals Edinburgh talk about their digital development journey, highlighting the lessons learned. Katy Beale, freelance social media consultant will present a case study of how she worked with the Tate to develop their Twitter social media strategy which has resulted in Tate now having over 100,000 Twitter followers.

There’s also an interview with Fiona Stewart, Creative Director of AmbItion Involved organisation, The Lot, and Lot audience member, Muriel MacKenzie. Plus workshops in Intellectual Property from Intellectual Assets Centre; Digital Video from New Media Scotland.

TBC III: Dusk To Dawn

The annual Together Beat Cancer party organisers are doing something a little bit different this year. On Friday 28 and Saturday 29 May TBC takes over the Buff Club in Glasgow for the Friday evening and then the Saturday afternoon. A two part event designed to raise both funds and awareness of the fantastic Maggies Centre charity.

The Radio Magnetic Soundsystem will be spinning tunes from 7pm until 10pm on the Friday evening and there’ll be live music from Loki, B-Movie Junkies, Louise McVey and the Cracks in the Concrete and Admiral Fallow. All this presented by our big pal and contributor Jim Gellatly.

On the Saturday of TBC III, between 2pm and 6pm you can get the chance to catch a variety of artists in ‘stripped down’ acoustic sessions featuring Heather Downie, Aaron Wright & the Aprils, Alan McKim and Findlay Napier. The ideal environment to recover from the night before we think!

Friday night costs £8 and this gets you into Saturday’s acoustic showcase gratis. £4 if you miss out on the Friday action.

Radio Magnetic Welcomes Cybraphon to Glasgow

Saturday 17 April is the opening night of the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art. To get the festival started FOUND, On The Fly and the Radio Magnetic Soundsystem will be performing in the venue which hosts FOUND’s autonomous robotic creation of last year, Cybraphon.

The SWG3 venue, in Glasgow’s Finnieston area, will exhibit the BAFTA winning Cybraphon until Monday 3 May. Admission to see Cybraphon on display is completely free and we urge you to go and have a look during its spell on the west coast.

The opening night will see performances from FOUND, On The Fly and DJ sets from us, the Radio Magnetic Soundsystem, too. Come on down, from 8pm on Saturday night.
