Next up in our series from this years Homegame music festival is lo-fi, Edinburgh based folk ensemble, Eagleowl.

Next up in our series from this years Homegame music festival is lo-fi, Edinburgh based folk ensemble, Eagleowl. Their sparse, warmly atmospheric sound fascinatingly stands alone, without the foundations of a percussion section and instead comprises of a double bass, violin, ukelele and glockenspiel.

Their first EP, For The Thoughts You Never Had, included individually handmade screen-printed packaging and gained a 4 star review from The Skinny, who stated that the band create “delicate, almost hypnotising” sound-scapes.

Although they don’t like to pigeon-hole their music solely within the folk bracket, and see folk as the starting point of their instrumentation, Eagleowl have fledged the nest as part of a strong network of musicians working with various independent promoters and labels based in Edinburgh, including other bands such as fellow Homegame performers, Found and Malcolm Middleton as well as Field Music and A Hawk and a Hacksaw.

Their philosphy in taking the time to do things right, rather than fast, ensures they maintain an independent, DIY ethos, fueling a healthy appetite for collaboration and investment in a diverse musical community as part of the Fife Kills and The Fence Collective. Their live set at the Homegame festival certainly reflects this lo-fi diversity perfectly.

Live set from the former Arab Strap lad and Falkirk's finest, Malcolm Middleton recorded at Fence Record's annual Homegame festival in 2009.

Malcolm Middleton was a corner stone of cult Scottish indie heroes Arab Strap. Formed in Falkirk in 1995, by Malcolm and Aidan Moffat, their take on music was unique, inventive, humorous and never backwards looking.

Their debut single on Chemikal Underground has hailed as one of the best singles of the last decade and established the band as pioneers of cutting edge indie music, playing sell out tours throughout the world. Malcolm Middleton is a solo artist of considerable charm, capable of taking intense emotions and using them to create darkly humorous, poignantly beautiful material.

Having just released his fifth solo studio album, the fantastic, Waxing Gibbous, we found Malcolm’s set at the Homegame festival to be one of the many highlights of the weekend, slotting nicely alongside the Fence Records stable and the various guests invited up to Fife for the event.

A live set from Fence Record's experimental electro-folk-pop quintet, FOUND, recorded at 2009's Homegame festival in Anstruther.

Homegame is the yearly music festival curated by the good people over at Fife’s Fence Records. The festival takes place within the quaint little fishing village of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife.

The cottage-indie label, Fence Records, which features on its roster the likes of Pictish Trail, HMS Ginafore, FOUND, Lone Pigeon, James Yorkston, Jon Hopkins and head honcho, King Creosote, have been organising the annual Homegame parties for the last six years with the popularity and reputation growing year on year.

2009 saw special guest appearances at the festival by the likes of Malcolm Middleton, Adem, Karine Polwart, Emma Pollock and De Rosa as well as the ever impressive established Fence Records contingent. Radio Magnetic made the trip East for the festival and were thoroughly charmed, impressed and intoxicated by the end of it. Over the course of the coming months we’ll be bringing you a selection of the festival highlights for your listening pleasure.

First up, Edinburgh-based experimental electro-folk-pop quintet and Radio Magnetic favourites, FOUND. The prolific outfit have been a part of the Fence squad for the last two years now after having being invited to play at the festival back in 2006. With two albums and several EPs in the last two years we predict big things for these lads and hope you dig the set as much as we did. Enjoy!
