Brooklyn’s alt-indie cartoonist, poet and anti-folk troubadour Jeffrey Lewis, and his latest band The Junkyard, have been a big hit in the Radio Magnetic office for quite some time now.

The talented outfit performed at Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire and we were lucky enough to catch their charmingly witty and unique performance.

The intimate gig, back on 31 August, was part of The Edge Festival season of concerts that coincided with The Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Check out the live recording here.

Brooklyn based anti-folk, satirical cartoonist and singer-songwriter, Jeffrey Lewis played The Edge Festival at Cabaret Voltaire on Monday 31 August.

His unique and humorous slant on the ‘indie’ band performance endeared him to the Edinburgh crowds for the evening. We’re big fans of Jeffrey’s work and have caught his live performance before so we jumped at the chance to catch up with him for a chat after up his set. Here Jeffrey talks about the anti-folk festival and the differences between music and his other passion, comic-book writing. Everyone’s favourite singer-songwriter miserablist, Malcolm Middleton, one time member of cult alt-indie duo Arab Strap played Cabaret Voltaire on 27 October as part of The Edge Festival.

In what was a great set from the Scot and a great night all round, we heard a selection of tracks from his latest album, Waxing Gibbous, along with plenty of classic Malcy solo material and an interesting choice for a cover version. This is a little taster of the night. Keep an eye on the site for more from this performance.

The triple-platinum selling and globe-trotting, Red Hot Chilli Pipers, were in Edinburgh to perform in front of a packed out crowd at the HMV Picture House on Wednesday 26 August.

The group, famous for their unique take on traditional Scottish music, incorporate rock and pop into their music and have been building quite a following and reputation since their T in The Park performance back in 2004. We caught up with band after The Edge performance for a chat about the live show and playing in their home country after world tours and super-stardom!

Hotly tipped Edinburgh producer, Oli Sabin AKA Unicorn Kid, is causing quite a stir with his unique brand of computer game inspired electro. The seventeen year old performed at two legs of The Edge Festival this year.

The first in support of Calvin Harris at the HMV Picture House and this set from Cabaret Voltaire where he appeared alongside fellow up-and-coming Scottish act, Young Fathers. With an impressive appearance at Green Man festival in Wales, two singles available now and an album due for release soon, Unicorn Kid is definitely one to watch. Here’s his set from The Edge Festival 2009, recorded live at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh.

New Scottish hip-hop outfit Young Fathers mix up an interesting and fun-loving blend of power pop and r ‘n’ b to make them stand-out as one of the most exciting new bands around. We caught up with them after their performance at The Edge Festival.

According to their myspace profile: The excitement of making music to this group of 20 year old ping pong fanatics was like making convulsive motions whilst standing on a thin surface of glass on the roof of a 300 million dollar condo in the Hollywood Hills.

They performed at Cabaret Voltaire, sharing a bill with Unicorn Kid, in Edinburgh. We found the band to be in high spirits and a jovial mood when we met in Edinburgh for a chat about producing the Young Fathers sound, the live set-up and their forthcoming debut album.

After electrifying performances from all three bands we pinned down Chris from The Elvis Suicide for a chat about punk inspirations, performing live and the venue for the night’s music, Sneaky Pete’s. He gives a detailed and humorous account of the acts he’s sharing a bill with and we also hear a few words from Lovvers.

As part of The Edge Festival 2009 we caught up with Edinburgh’s Unicorn Kid at Cabaret Voltaire. For fans of the 17 year old electro musician this was a chance to hear his single Lion Hat (named after his trademark headgear) live.

Lion Hat been getting rave reviews and massive mainstream radio coverage since its release earlier this year. His popularity is such that pop legends, The Pet Shop Boys, asked Oliver Sabin to remix their track Did You See Me Coming for a 12″ vinyl release on major label Parlophone. Listen to this feature for a few words from the man himself, recorded after his appearance at The Edge Festival.
