Edinburgh’s Departure Lounge have got a very special night planned for Saturday 24 April. Three exceptional guests on one line-up for their annual Saturday soiree at The Caves (they normally take over the venue on Fridays). And we’re going along to record it and chat to these fine three guests on the night. You should get down there too.

The event at the end of April will see Bass Clef, the 9 piece Hypnotic Brass Emsemble and the SoulJazz Orchestra join Departure Lounge regulars, Astroboy, Jiminez and Mr Zimbabwe for what looks like the best line up for a night out in Edinburgh this year so far, by far. Expect bass, afrobeat, dubstep, dub, funk and soul in this night of afrocentric vibrations: ancient and future.

With contributions in various media, from his ground-breaking C4 show, SiN with Bruce Morton in 1993 to contemporary work writing for artists such as Frankie Boyle and Elaine C. Smith.

Along the way he’s written for the national press; received a Perrier Nomination; made three tours of the UK; popped up on BBC Radio 2, 4, 5 and 7; presented six radio series for Radio Scotland, sneaked in cameo appearances in Rab C. Nesbitt and Still Game and has written plays, pantomimes and even a musical stage show.

Amidst all this and loads of other stuff, Bruce’s first love remains stand-up comedy. He loves music too.

Pop Ambient 2010 is out this week and here’s a 30 minute mix by PA mainstay Popnoname who has picked his favourite tunes from the series and done a more than lovely mix…it’s available here.

Newcomers may ask – so what is POP AMBIENT? A genre? Possibly. A statement of musical mindset? Absolutely! POP AMBIENT was conceived by KOMPAKT co-owner and producer WOLFGANG VOIGT and remains a collection selected and curated by VOIGT. POP AMBIENT remains an ambitious entity of KOMPAKT that certainly draws influence from his legendary GAS recordings of the late ‘90’s .

The musical context often characterizes densely layered ambient soundscapes that are not concerned with beats, percussion or basslines. Throughout POP AMBIENT’s editions, the music has evolved ever so naturally – almost characterizing the blossoming of the floral arrangements that have graced the series covers year after year.

We say this every year but POP AMBIENT 2010 is a defining moment for the series – a change in pace but a familiar face for those that have been yearning for our annual remedy. Enjoy.

“We Sink Ships is a collaboration featuring Heidi Kuisma, a Finnish born, Glasgow based photographer and Neil Milton, a Scottish born photographer, musician and record label owner living in Warsaw in Poland. Together they create and curate online photo exhibitions and present weekly podcasts hosted on Radio Magnetic.

On the first Tuesday of every month, We Sink Ships will feature something they love – it might be a band, a label, an artist, a gallery or a venue – then Neil will play out with 45 minutes of electro-disco-wonk-pop.  The following Tuesday each month, We Sink Ships will invite a guest DJ to record a set which will be preceded by an introduction to the guest.  On the 3rd Tuesday of the month, Heidi will take her turn to play some music but not before they’ve discussed a monthly Nick-Hornby-esque top 5.

Finishing off the month, Tuesday number 4 will be something a little different; with the return of Neil’s record label, We Sink Ships are presenting the Too Many Fireworks podcast, featuring music from the label, past and present, plus Neil’s latest ambient, minimalist or alternative-classical finds.

We begin with a prelude.  Neil kicks us off with some four-to-the-floor, Heidi takes over with a typically eclectic selection and Neil brings us to a close with a too many fireworks mix.”

Welcome to the first Wrong Island Live podcast. Over the next wee while, we’ll be recording the full night’s musical selection at our basement party in Glasgow and sending you a little snippet via our good pals at Radio Magnetic Towers as part of their Homeclubbing series, showcasing the very best in Scotland’s electric electronic music scene.

Expect a warts and all recording of Disco, Dubstep, Rave and all the dots that can be joined between. Also, expect the mixing to get progressively worse as we encounter monitor problems, feedback issues and probably more pints of Kronenbourg and Addlestone’s in three and a half hours than the Scottish Government would recommend in a fortnight.

The next drunken installment from Wrong Island is our early Xmas present at Nice & Sleazy on Saturday 12 December. Get right on one.

This first dose of Wrong was recorded on Saturday 14 November in Nice & Sleazy and is dedicated to the memory of Jerry Fuchs, who passed away exactly one week prior.

We at Wrong Island were lucky enough to meet The Fantastic Mr Fuchs on a couple of occassions and have rarely, if ever, met someone who instantly captured our hearts in the same way that he did with so many others around the globe. He is and will be forever sadly missed.

Norris rose to fame with The Grid (alongside former Soft Cell member David Ball) in the early 1990s with a string of trance house hits including Swamp Thing and Texas Cowboys. More recently he and Erol Alkan have been making otherworldly electronic waves as Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve whose Re-animations Vol. One remix album came out at the start of 2009.

Not content with the BTWS output (they’ve got their debut album proper due in 2010) and the recent reforming of The Grid to release 2008’s Doppelganger album and tour the festival circuit, Norris’s latest project is the new solo moniker, The Time And Space Machine.

This mix and feature is dedicated to the memory and memories of Jerry Fuchs, who died tragically, on Saturday 7 November 2009, aged 34. Jerry was the drummer with two of the most outstanding live outfits I have ever witnessed, !!! and The Juan MaClean; and he also performed live occassionally with LCD Soundsystem. Glasgow DJ, Courier of Death label boss and DFA ally, Teamy, a friend an massive fan of Jerry’s said today, “you know, it’s sort of cliché to say but he was geninuely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Incredibly saddening.”

The street carnival, which also featured performances from Stacey Pullen, Theo Parrish, Al Kent, Rahaan, Den Haan, Floating Points, Numbers and Optimo, welcomed the two Tims to DJ for the attendant disco-heads and clubbers  at the SWG3 venue in Glasgow’s West End. Here’s a live recording of their DJ set for your enjoyment. These two don’t really need an introduction but here’s one anyway…

Tim Goldsworthy is a British record producer, DJ and recording artist, has lived and worked in New York and is now back on home turf and based in Bristol. Originally a musician and producer with UNKLE he currently runs DFA Records with partner in crime, James Murphy. Alongside James Lavelle, Goldsworthy set-up, one-time home to DJ Shadow and DJ Krush, Mo’ Wax Records back in 2001. He works with Murphy as a integral part of LCD Soundsystem and helps produce the myriad DFA remixes which prolifically hit the turntables of the most respected DJs on the planet and homes of the most devoted and discerning music fans on the planet.

Tim Sweeney is a rather talented and well mannered DJ and the proprieter of underground electronic mix haven, Beats In Space. He holds a residency at New York’s APT club and is in demand all over New York City and far further afield due to his unique style, bringing together all sorts from old school hip-hop to techno and disco. Rarities, re-edits and remixes as well as the finest current and contemporary sounds the man hears. His above mentioned website might be the best thing on the internet. Full stop.

The H&P parties are staged in numerous venues throughout Glasgow and have played host to a whole range of DJ’s and live acts including James Holden, Todd Terje, Joakim, Congregation, Daniele Baldelli, Jackmaster, Daeadalus and Silver Apples. Not to mention debuts from Aeroplane, Solomun, Pilooski, James Pants, Heartbreak, Kelley Polar, and many more.

With the recent debut H&P party in London under the belt the night is really beginning to get the recognition it deserves. Featured on the London bill,an incredible line-up included Dissident label boss, Andy Blake, History Clock Records’s Nathan G. Wilkins and Hardway Bros, new DFA lads, Cage and Aviary, Glasgow’s Goodhand from the Numbers collective and Ali Renault all over two rooms in Shoreditch’s Horse and Groom bar. Twas a great night and hopefully more London excursions in the post for the merry ship, H&P.
