Having been immersed in Glasgow’s diverse and vibrant music scene for a number of years, Belmondo have just released their debut EP Dressed Up and Let Down.

Led by singer songwriter Tiff Griffin, the band is completed by members from as far afield as Hungary and Australia playing cellos, vioins and a fretless bass to create music that follows in the tradition of fellow Scot’s King Creosote and John Martyn whilst tipping their hat to trans atlantic indie artists like Bon Iver and Iron & Wine.

We invited the band down to record a special acoustic set for us.

Exclusive Live Circuit session with the outstanding, Brandt Brauer Frick. We recorded them live at Stereo in Glasgow back in December 2011 at the Men & Machines club night.

The 2011 Mr Machine album !K7 from the trio was one of our favourites of last year so we were delighted to get the opportunity to not only see them live but also record the set for Radio Magnetic. They didn’t disappoint as you’ll hear. They manage to recreate classic house and techno sounds, favouring live instruments over the laptops sets of some of their peers, to stunning effect. It was a really exhilarating performance and we think this recording captures that well.

The quite awesome UK based, Malian blues rock outfit, Tinariwen return to Glasgow in 2012 to play at Oran Mor and we urge you to get a ticket. Their latest album, Tassili released earlier this year is amongst the best LPs they’ve made, we think.

Given their excellent new album and their upcoming gig in Glasgow next year we thought it was about time we unearthed this classic live recording we made back in 2007 at what was a truly memorable evening of music at The Arches.

With his new album The Devils Walk just around the corner and a tour underway it’s an exciting time for Berliner Apparat. His new long player, while retaining some of his trademark production, is more than capable of crossing over to a more mainstream audience. It’s certainly his most accomplished work to date.

We have unearthed an amazing Live Circuit Session that he recorded in 2006 for BPitch Control which he did before embarking on his Orchestra Of Bubbles tour with Ellen Allien.

In June 2005, Thievery Corporation were touring to promote their album The Cosmic Game. We were there to record the Arches, Glasgow performance which you can enjoy now.

Last in the line for our special Soma 20 Live Circuit Sessions are the label bosses themselves, Slam. From their early beginnings in 1988 Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle gradually grew their reputations as DJs, playing in Glasgow and all over the UK as the acid house scene took hold. Then after co-founding Soma Quality Recordings in 1991 they finally turned their hand to creating their own tracks with Snapshots and then Positive Education firmly establishing them as high quality producers.

They used this platform to become one of the biggest techno DJ acts in the world today, playing on every continent, recording numerous Essential Mixes as well as hosting their own tent at T In The Park. So sit back and get your head into Slam live all night at the Arches, Glasgow in August 2002.

Next in the series celebrating 20 years of Soma, here’s an exclusive Silicone Soul live recording recorded by us back in 2003.

Since first appearing on Soma Records in 1998, DJ-production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, aka Silicone Soul, have occupied a special place in the over-crowded field of electronic dance music, mainly through the depth and quality of their recordings plus innate understanding of music‘s grand heritage and its constant development.

Silicone Soul is the perfect name to describe the way they cajole then sculpt every sonic ingredient from their machines with maximum care and emotion. They’ve always turned their heads away from vacuous trends to follow their passion and instincts, famously turning down Top Of The Pops for their 2001 top ten hit Right On, but happy in the knowledge that every single they release kicks off in the underground clubs; esoteric, melodically-textured and underpinned by a compulsive, euphoric throb harking back to the earliest days of disco. Over the course of four albums, the pair have turned the often tricky task of making a substantial electronic dance album into an art form, partly by remembering what made classic albums happen and last in the first place.
