Jim Gellatly lays down another mix of breaking sounds from Scotland and beyond.

In his latest update on what’s hot and happening in the world of New Music, Jim ponders the question of name changes, with Admiral Fallow, LightGuides and Penny Black just 3 acts sporting new monikers.

Also… why Jim’s planned DJ set after Biffy Clyro at King Tut’s 20th Birthday Party went out the window… and just why Cheesy Pasty may have made one act’s night at the Dundee Concert For Haiti.

Their pedigree may include The Verve, Blur, The Orb, Paul McCartney and Gorillaz... but Jim Gellatly finds out just what's so special about Erland & The Carnival.

Jim Gellatly meets another of his tips for the coming year…

As featured in Jim’s 10 for 2010 (episode 64), Erland & The Carnival really are a delightful musical box of tricks. Their self-titled debut album dips into the past and drags the influences and inspirations screaming into the 21st Century. Live, as Jim witnessed at The Captain’s Rest in Glasgow, “It’s anything but the folk revival you might expect from the outside looking in. The roots may be in folk music, but these guys have unleashed an eclectic indie-rock monster ranging from psychedelic folk through to garage rock and post-Brit Pop.”

Perhaps what’s on offer becomes less of a surprise when you realise the rich pedigree of the band. Guitarist Simon Tong first made his name with The Verve, before playing with Blur, Gorillaz and most recently The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Drummer David Nock’s CV also reads like a Who’s Who of indie rock as a session musician, engineer and programmer including The Cult, The Orb, The Charlatans, The Futureheads and even with Sir Paul McCartney on his The Fireman project.

Fronted by Orkney’s Erland Cooper, plus Andy Harris on keys and bass player Danny Wheeler, Erland & The Carnival are set to take the festivals by storm in the Summer.

In this latest episode of Jim Gellatly’s New Music, the band perform acoustically and select some of the music that has helped forge their sound.

Jim Gellatly joins explosive Glasgow trio GoGoBot at home in their studio.

Previously featured in Jim’s 10 for 2010 (Episode 64), GoGoBot are one of the Scottish music scene’s best kept secrets. Snapped up by the same management company behind hit-makers Scouting For Girls, and recently tipped by the influential Record Of The Day, the band are now ready to be unleashed upon the public at large.

As the first person ever to feature them on the radio, they invited Jim along to GoGoBot HQ for a sneak preview of what’s in store. As well as 4 exclusive live session tracks… Gordo, Marko & Rosie also picked some of their favourite songs from other acts.

New music guru Jim Gellatly picks out more bubbling talent from Scotland and beyond.

With the first episode of 2010, it’s mostly first-timers to Jim Gellatly’s New Music. Among the selection, Jim reveals the latest projects from former Drive-By Argument members, he’s got Scotland’s answer to Pet Shop Boys, and just why do bands claim to come from Glasgow when their roots may actually be a lot cooler?
