Kinky Afro will be hanging up their dancing shoes on Friday 25 September, that’s this Friday, with one last bash at Glasgow’s Sub Club.

Hoisted out of semi-retirement for the occasion is the one and only Matthew Herbert who will be joining the resident Afro DJs for a night of clubbing and hedonism of the highest order. This mix is a taster of the kind of tunage to be expected at the farewell bash featuring Afro anthems and the trademark mixture of house, hip hop, techno, electro and the all important and definitive influence of Jamaican music in its various sonic guises. Kinky Afro’s tenth birthday and farewell party is a Homeclubbing event. Get down there.

The first of the legendary Monkey Cum Mixes for your listening dilection.

The first of the legendary Monkey Cum Mixes for your listening dilection. With Kinky Afro’s 10th birthday bash and farewell soiree at the Sub Club fast approaching, get your ears around this in preparation for what will surely be the highlight of the clubbing year.

These mixes are a collaboration between Mr Mafro of Kinky Afro and DJ Prime8 from the Operators and Seminal Emissions.

They are a four deck experimental exploration from hip hop to techno and everything in between. Twisting the classics into bootlegs and unearthing anthems left, right and centre – there are four mixes that roughly covered a year of 4 deck mayhem.

Since they were circulated on CDR round Glasgow’s bars and parties several years ago there have been several calls for these to be put up online and they are now here as one series for your hungry ‘pod. Stay tuned for the rest. Kinky Afro’s 10th birthday party featuring Matthew Herbert is a Homeclubbing event.

After a decade of Subbie action Kinky Afro is set to untie their ravin’ laces on Kinky Afro’s 10th Birthday. The date for your diary is Friday 25 September.

After a decade of Subbie action Kinky Afro is set to untie their ravin’ laces on Kinky Afro’s 10th Birthday. The date for your diary is Friday 25 September (not Friday 10 October as our newsletter mistakenly reported…ooops, sorry).

Matthew Herbert has been pulled out of his self enforced DJ retirement to come and smash up his splintered and most experimental records for your grooving delectation. Mixed up with 10 years of Afro anthems.

Herbert in short is one of Kinky Afro’s and indeed Radio Magnetic’s idols. Recording as Herbert, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo, Transformer and Wishmountain his music has sculpted our electronic landscape whilst bringing a rare injection of political fervour and avant-garde expression.

Comprehensively innovative in every area he engages, Herbert’s skills extend to being an explosive DJ making him our perfect companion to send Missy Afro to her final level before noisily going into the night.

Join the facebook event page for more info and to get your hands on a commemorative Kinky Afro T-shirt designed by Tommy from electro-folksters FOUND.

To get you in the mood for the Kinky Afro swansong, resident Mr Mafro and long-time friend of the ‘fro, DJ Prime8 have put together this rather fine mix encapsulating some of the night’s top tunes from the past ten years.

Deploying trombone, percussion, whistles and even a Theremin, Bass Clef cleaves his own low frequency niche through live improvisation and a frenetic, captivating live show on a level with electronic performers as devastatingly talented as Jamie Lidell or Matthew Herbert.

A one man live vortex of hertz, a live phenomenon of seedy dance culture, Bass Clef comes to one of Radio Magnetic’s favourite club nights, Kinky Afro.

Deploying trombone, percussion, whistles and even a Theremin, Bass Clef cleaves his own low frequency niche through live improvisation and a frenetic, captivating live show on a level with electronic performers as devastatingly talented as Jamie Lidell or Matthew Herbert.

His album ‘A Smile is Curve that never Straightens’ plumbed the deepest fathoms of hertz with a refreshing slant on analogue dance and the need NOT to use a computer.

Mungos Hifi, Scotland’s number one Reggae dancehall sound-system, have been releasing hits since 2001 when their killer track Wickedness featuring Brother Culture, released on the dubhead label, first took the world by storm getting heavy plays by Jah Shaka and Iration Steppas.

Laying down a serious warm up of dub and dancehall, Scotland’s premier lords of the low end will be the perfect warm up to Bass Clef. With massive reggae recordings on their Scotch Bonnet label as well as recently launched their new Scrubadub dubstep and digi-dub label they are the nation’s most ideal comrades to launch the second last Kinky Afro into her dancing revere.

Toddla is heading back up to Glasgow on Friday 29th May. Come on over to Kinky Afro at the Sub Club, Glasgow where you can hear the live Toddla T Skanky Skanky in action, as part of Toddla T new album launch.

A lanky streak of gabbling enthusiasm, through 2008, Toddla T’s Fill Up Mi Portion, Soundtape Killin’ and Manabadman singles, not to mention his brilliant Ghettoblaster No.1 mixtape download, announced him as British dance music’s brightest new talent.

Toddla T’s influences – that “clangy Sheffield electronic sound” first minted by Cabaret Voltaire; local speed garage variant, bassline; early Warp Records’ bleep techno – may be peculiarly South Yorkshire, but Britain hasn’t heard party music this raw and vibrant since early Basement Jaxx. “I was conscious people might find it a bit ‘aggro’,” says Toddla. “But when I DJ, there’s so many girls into it. It’s mad. I thought I made boy music, but no, luckily.”

Toddla played at Kinky Afro, at the Sub Club in Glasgow, in January 2008. His bumping bass headline set blends the beats and riddims that make this young man one of the DJs and producers of the moment.

Celebrating the launch of his new album Skany Skany, Toddla T is coming back to Kinky Afro at the Sub Club next Friday 29th May 2009 so be sure to head down and check out the man he’s remixed Tricky, Roisin Murphy, Hot Chip and Roots Manuva.
