The Hinterland multi-venue and multi-genre music festival is back for 2010. Taking over Glasgow for one day on Saturday 3 April from 5pm until 3am. Radio Magnetic are very pleased to announce that we’ll be hosting the Arches event as part of Hinterland which features Friendly Fires and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard amongst some more treats and surprises including a Ballers Social Club showcase and The Greco Roman Soundsystem.

So far acts on the bill, over and above the unmissable Arches finale, include Jeffrey Lewis, Hot Club De Paris, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, British Sea Power, The Wave Pictures and Kitty The Lion.

Tickets are only £10 for early birds and this ticket allows access to all events, venues and gigs over the course of the Saturday. Sounds like a bargain to us.

Plus there’s a load more to be announced over the coming weeks including the full lowdown on acts and exactly which of the city’s venues are taking part. Watch this space for more info or check out the official Hinterland website.

After ten years of keeping quiet, Leftfield will return to the stage with a tremendous live act at this summer's RockNess fetsival. RockNess 2010 takes place on Friday 11 June to Sunday 13 June and is sure to be another excellent addition to the festival calendar.

After ten years of keeping quiet, Leftfield will return to the stage with a tremendous live act at this summer’s RockNess festival. The event, which has been referred to as the ‘Most Beautiful Festival in the World,’ will be held on the shores of iconic Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands for three days in June 2010.

As one of the most influential electronic bands of all time, Leftfield delved into a new style of music that no one had ever touched on before. The fusion of epic soundscapes with intoxicating rhythms in their album, Leftism, was what truly marked them in dance music history. The Face magazine described it as “… the best dance album ever.” Even now, bands such as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Underworld are still inspired to use the pounding beats of Leftfield although none of it compares.

Jim King, Festival Director and huge fan of Leftfield shared his excitement by saying: “We’ve been trying to get Leftfield to do some shows for years and now its actually going to happen.” After last year’s great success, RockNess 2010 takes place on Friday 11 June to Sunday 13 June which is sure to bring an outstanding line up of acts to the stage for another year.

Here’s a video we made of Glasgow’s premier indie choir, The Parsonage at T in the Park 2009. We spent a lot of time at TITP this year at the new, Healthy T area where we were lucky to catch The Parsonage perform on Saturday 11 July. On the same day the choir also took to the festival’s main stage.

Named in honour of the Grievous Angel, Mr Gram Parsons, The Parsonage is a group of around forty Glasgow based singers which was formed at the beginning of 2006. Ther first EP, This Ain’t No Lovey Dovey was released in December 2007 on Glasgow label OSScarr Records (now operating as Optimo Music) and claims to fame include being Rod Stewart’s backing choir for numerous festival perfomances and Rod the mod’s Hampden Park live dates!

The Parsonage’s deubut album, Hank and Gram, featuring four Hank Williams and four Gram Parsons penned ditties respectively, is due for release in early 2010. We can’t wait to hear it.

Scottish Enterprise want to celebrate The MOBO Awards taking place in Glasgow on Wednesday 30 September. They contacted Radio Magnetic's parent company, Inner Ear, to organise an event on the eve of the awards ceremony at The Hub, in Glasgow.

Scottish Enterprise want to celebrate The MOBO Awards taking place in Glasgow on Wednesday 30 September. They contacted Radio Magnetic’s parent company, Inner Ear, to organise an event on the eve of the awards ceremony at The Hub, Pacific Quay, Glasgow. We were really interested by the concept of The MOBO Awards coming to Glasgow so we, alongside Soma Skool, Open Ear and New Media Corp have devised the Glasgow. Music. Now. event.

It’s absolutely free and all starts at 1pm on Tuesday 29 September so get there for 12.30 if you think it would interest you.

Glagow. Music. Now. will showcase a selection of excellent Glasgow acts performing, including Punjabi No. 1, Preston Reed, S-Type and Scatterbrain feat. Loki, Marrik and Depths and the Flyin’ Jalapenos breakdancing troupe. There will be music industry and educational stalls, demos and workshops throughout the course of the day (including demonstrations on Ableton Live and video making on a budget) and two panel discussions. The first of these panel debates will be chaired by Channel 4 Nations and Regions Director, Stuart Cosgrove and sitting on the panel we have Mickey Ferrari (Umoja Events), Esa Williams (Sub Club), Laura McCrum (Urbanscot) and MC Profisee (Cloak x Dagger) debating the relevance of MOBO in Glasgow via two discussions: Scotland’s Cultural Soul in the Digital Age; and What do you know about The MOBO Awards.

The second panel is a general music industry discussion organised by the James Watt College Music Business Department. On the day you’ll receive a free goodie bag courtesy of the good people at Soma Recordings and there will be a raffle in aid of the Nordoff Robins music therapy trust, where you’ll stand the chance to win, a Flip Camera, Traktor Duo software, MOBO tickets and mini Pro Tools studio set-up. Anyone with an interest in MOBO or an interest in the music business in Glasgow should head along on Tuesday for what should be an informative and entertaining day. For those who aren’t able to attend this event Radio Magnetic will be documenting the entire event and audio and video extracts will be available from the Radio Magnetic website in the coming weeks.

Demo Fund Promotional Video from Inner Ear on Vimeo.

Young musicians (up to the age of 25) in Scotland should check out the Scottish Arts Council’s Demo Fund. Part of the Youth Music Initiative, the Demo Fund provides financial support to recording studios to enable them to record with emerging acts.

Grants of up to £6,000 are available for Scottish-based studios. Bands and studios should check out the fund as the funding application requires studios to have identified at least some of the young acts they want to record.

This fund supports studios in recording with young acts, helping them secure new recording clients and open them up to a potential new customer base. Bands will then get the opportunity to record in a professional environment and benefit from the expertise and advice of veteran engineers and producers.

Inner Ear, Radio Magnetic’s parent company, was commissioned by the Youth Music Initiative, to produce a digital resource to support the Demo Fund. They made a promotional video featuring music industry heads, to explain what the fund is, who can apply and give some tips on how to stand out, and a step-by-step guide on how to fill in the application (which can be a daunting process).

If you’re in a young Scottish-based band, or work in a Scottish-based recording studio, then this fund could be very useful indeed. Watch the video and application guide. Check out the Scottish Arts Council website for more information.

The definitive destination for emerging and unsigned bands and musicians has just stepped up a gear!

Calling all unsigned bands and musicians. This publication is something you cannot afford to be without. If you’re not already familiar, it’s full of amazing features, contacts, advice and money-saving special offers on a regular basis. For any unsigned or emerging bands out there it acts as an invaluable guide to how to survive in today’s music industry.

The current edition of The Unsigned Guide (2009) contains a jaw-dropping 864 full-colour pages of music industry contacts, industry reports, practical advice and hints & tips on all aspects of music from live performance (including venues & promoters), record companies, music publishers, UK festivals, producers, recording, management companies and much more, with 33 sections in all. The Unsigned Guide 2009 UK Edition also comes with a 100% money back guarantee and if you order now you’ll save £10 (offer price £29.99).

Having been first published back in 2003 it has provided the definitive guide to getting onboard and surviving in the music industry for up-and-coming and unsigned musicians. A lot has changed since 2003 though, and the guide has evolved and adapted itself to suit the current music-industry climate.

Heralding the importance of the new D.I.Y. scene and the need to be ever more creative whilst being business-like in the new music industry, The Unsigned Guide has launched some new, free features to its website www.theunsignedguide.com to help empower bands and musicians and present a clearer picture of exactly what’s going on and how things are changing in the UK music industry.

These new features include a D.I.Y. music industry news service with RSS feeds at www.theunsignedguide.com/news plus music industry blogs and an exclusive new offering called The Survival Guide – most neatly described as voucher codes for the music industry.

The Unsigned Guide has numerous offers available at www.theunsignedguide.com/survival specifically for emerging bands and
musicians from all over the UK. Current offers include discounted recording sessions, cut price band photography, free online shop setups, discounted t-shirt printing and cheap CD duplication rates. New offers are added every week and the service is free of charge to everyone.

Plus, when you buy the latest edition of The Unsigned Guide, you’ll also get free access to the new online database. The online service allows you to view the entire contents of your directory online, and also has some impressive search facilities built-in. For example, you can filter the whole of The Unsigned Guide by your nearest city. Simply select from over 130 key towns and cities and then filter, and you’ve got (for example) The Unsigned Guide Glasgow, The Unsigned Guide Manchester, The Unsigned Guide London, The Unsigned Guide Leeds…and because The Unsigned Guide extensively covers England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales you’ll always find a city near you! You can now also search by preferred genre in sections including Record Companies, Publishing Companies & Management Companies.

So, for all the current music news, blogs, Survival Guide offers, discounts and details of The Unsigned Guide Online beta version go to:
