A relatively freaky tricky treaty for you with this installment. The fourth and by far the strangest mix to date. As ever, the most pleasing old and new music heard in recent weeks feature; frequently with a relatively ugly undercurrent of terror-stricken torment.

In keeping with the oft-overlooked notion of good old fashioned fun and also timed to coincide with the scariest event on the yearly calendar, here’s my Halloween special mix.

We kick off with NY’s No Wave electronic pioneers, Suicide‘s ghostly tune from their 1977 eponymous debut, devils come courtesy of Joakim and Scratch Perry , Dogs of War provide the pirates, zombies are more Fela Kuti‘s bag and Sexual Harrassment need a freak. Some ridiculous hip-hop halloween edit of Morrissey (with whom the responsibility for this lies I have no idea), Capracara, Supermax, Ariel Pink and John Cooper Clarke are all in town this week too.

Spooking hell! Time to get off your monkey nut.

Moon themed classics from Thin Lizzy, Talking Heads and ELO sit awkwardly alongside more unusual recordings from the likes of Elias Rahbani, Tri Atma, Pulp, K Barre, Tiny Tim, Wreckless Eric and, of course, Joey Moon.

At this time of year, rather than bore you with a seasonal or xmas themed selection of music I thought I’d bore you all with this instead. Many moons ago (about a year actually), I had way too much time on my hands, and started the moonshine enduced Wired To The Moon facebook group. The intention was to try and get friends to suggest their favourite videos, songs, pictures and general lunar themed nonsense to create the perfect almoonac of moon tunes. There’s now 200+ moonmbers and nearly 100 moon tunes:

Moony thanks to all the lunartics who’ve joined in on the moonsense so far. And now, at long last, I’ve put together a moon-mix of my personal favourites. Surely the Radio Magnetic station moonager has better things to do with his time you would think. You’d probably be right:

Welcome to another Relative Frequency outing. This mix featuring Andy's favourite tunes of the last twelve months in an hour long trip through 2009. Bibio, King Creosote, Dan Deacon, Joakim and a shedload more.

Welcome to another Relative Frequency outing. This mix featuring Andy’s favourite tunes of the last twelve months in an hour long trip through 2009. A varied voyage as ever will be ventured upon within. I hope you enjoy it and that you discover a little gem or two which you might not have stumbled on otherwise.

Once again, sorry for the bad mixing at certain points but it’s all about the tunes baby. The above Denon AVR Receiver is partly to blame for this; being 100 years out of date the THD+N vs Frequency modulator couldn’t be volted, ahhed and ohmed to the high standard I had initially hoped for. Probably need an upgrade.

Regardless of this antiquated frequency charting system the last year has been fantastic for new music. I’ve included here the finest tracks from some my favourite albums of 2009. Ranging from the beautifully dreamy downtempo funk of Bibio to the deranged tech-disco of Mungolian Jet Set, a few choice DFA cuts, Joakim and the spellbinding Rims by King Creosote. The Fence man’s finest five and a half minutes to date. All that and more. Tonight we’re going to party like it’s nearly the end of 2009.

December is here children. God bless us every one.

Tracklist

Animal Collective – Lion In A Coma

Bibio – Lover’s Carvings

The Whitest Boy Alive – Courage

King Creosote – Rims

Welcome to the third Relative Frequency outing. More of the musical findings of Andy McColgan from the last week or two captured in an 80 minute mix. This time round Boney M edits, Kompakt techno, Factory punky-funk and more.

Welcome to the third Relative Frequency outing. More of the musical findings of Andy McColgan from the last week or two captured in an 80 minute mix.

The wind rose diagram above details the relative frequency of directions from where the wind is coming from, and the relative frequency of the windspeed. For example, approximately 2% of general observations have wind directly from the west, with 15 kts < speed <=21 kts. Use this to ascertain the best direction to face when listening so as to not get too carried away when doing so.

This most recent mix is, again, a most varied and most pleasurable journey. Featured on it we have lots of disco, The New York pop-funk of The Phenomenal Handclap Band, the North East of England disco-pop-punk-funk of Quando Quango, another appearance of Jago’s Italo-disco-house beauty ‘I’m Going To Go’ and the quite stunning recent re-edit of LCD’s 45:33 by Theo Parrish alongside a whole lot more. I hope you like it for it’s the best one yet.

Tracklist

This is the second Relative Frequency mix. More new sounds from the past, present and future featured. This week Solomun vs Ost and Kjex, Map of Africa, Padded Cell and K.C. Flight amongst a whole host of others.

This is the second Relative Frequency mix which, as you know, are being posted on the site relatively frequently. More new sounds from the past, present and future featured.

The above line graph will help you determine how frequently the average listener is likely to play the mix on a daily basis depending on the height of their favourite polygon in relation to their overall enjoyment of said polygon.

The mix, again, takes in a mixture of styles and ideas highlighted by the atrocious attempts at mixing at certain parts of it but dont let that put you off. We begin with the dirty blues psychedelia of DJ Harvey and Thomas Rub N’ Tug’s Map of Africa outfit, travel through the Parisian streets of Noir Desir to the dirty, deep and soulful house of the Motor City Drum Ensemble ending with the Italo jazz prog-up of an extended dance remix of Jean Luc Ponty’s Open Minds. These open minds of which Jean Luc Ponty speaks are the key to happiness and enjoyment of this musical selection.

Go on girl. Give it a whirl.

This is the first mix from new station manager, Andy McColgan. It takes in the best bits and pieces of new and old music Andy's been hearing over the last few weeks.

This is the first mix from new station manager, Andy McColgan. It takes in the best bits and pieces of new and old music Andy’s been hearing over the last few weeks, as highlighted by the relative frequency density histogram above.

The title, Relative Frequency, has many meanings and connotations one of which is the fact that Andy hopes to be firing more of these mixes at you relatively frequently. Keep an ear to the station if you want to hear more meanings and more mixes.

It takes in quite a mixture of styles. From recently DFA signed, Dissident duo Cage and Aviary through bloggers of choice, Allez Allez’s re-edit of The Smith’s under-rated classic, Barbarism Begins At Home, YMO’s Haruomi Hosono and a truly marvellous Todd Terje/Wade Nichol African-esque re-edit; to the cowbell and handclap friendly stroll of Supermayer and the slo-mo disco house of Rub N’ Tug’s LCD Soundsystem makeover. So, boys and girls, notebooks at the ready…

And, give a little listen. Give a little listen. And always let your conscience be your guide.
