In this show, for the first time, we let him loose in the studio. For the first in John’s new Broken Ear series he interviews ascendant Glasgow band Some Young Pedro.

Broken Ear also gets off to a good start with a Radio Magnetic-friendly selection of contemporary alternative, folk, altered pop, hard rock and indie. John even manages to slip a tropicalia number and classic Television cut for good measure.

When putting together the mighty Eruption Rock n Roll weekender Rasef new that if he got one man on the bill then they’d all come out of the woodwork. That man is the Reverend Beat-Man.

BEAT-MAN is the Swiss head honcho of Voodoo Rhythm Records and has led that country’s premiere garage band, The Monsters, for the past 17 years. He is currently in receipt of religion, living life as a primitive gospel blues trash evangelist known as REVEREND BEAT-MAN (with a band called the Un-Believers.) “Get On Your Knees” was recorded at UK’s legendary Toe Rag Studios, with songs like “Oh Lord”, “The Lord Is Coming Back”, and others that can’t be printed here.

The Reverand joins Rasef in the studio for a chat and knees up with some of the tracks that are inspiring him right now including some unreleased exclusives.

Perhaps all the Radio Magnetic listeners Stateside can give us some tips. Our newest addition to the core team, Andy McColgan, tipped us off about an event which promises to be a night to remember.

Balearic Obama and Cosmic Geezer Rice present a night of disco, funk and house. They invite people to join them for a night of getting into a united state.

If you’re in Glasgow, celebrate independence day in style (USA-themed dress style if you fancy) at The Universal, Sauchiehall Lane from 10pm—3am for only £3.

Word on the street is that if you whisper “Radio Magnetic” at the door, you might be in for a little treat.

Drum and bass pioneer and Good Looking Records label boss, LTJ Bukem is at the helm for the latest Fabric mix.

Drum and bass pioneer and Good Looking Records label boss, LTJ Bukem is at the helm for the latest Fabric mix.

“As a kid, over the course of a couple of years I got heavily into jazz, discovering Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Lonnie Liston Smith, all those guys that I now idolise and have collected ever since, I was hooked. Nigel changed my whole perception of music and developed my love for it at the same time; the first tune that he played me was ‘Lenore’ by Chick Corea and that has stuck with me right to this day.

I started a soundsystem called Sunshine back in the early 80s and me and a group of guys would do house parties, buy the music and do the usual soundsystem thing. A few years later I met a guy called Paul Waller in Blackmarket, and he said “Do you know anyone that plays the piano?” I told him I did and he said, “Well, listen man, we’re doing this remix and I work for Nellee Hooper (of Soul II Soul). Come down to the studio, we need some keyboards.” So I went down there, and from just exploring the idea of wanting to be a DJ. The first track I ever made was ‘Logical Progression’ in 1990. It was a transitional period musically, but ‘Logical Progression’ was at a time when drum & bass wasn’t really there – so it was effectively, the beginning of drum & bass. In the early 1990s Good Looking Records got set up too.

Progression Sessions must be one of the longest running residency concepts in the scene. It started in 94/95 and it’s still going in 2009. We did Ministry for a few years, we did The End for a few years, we did Shepherds Bush Empire and various other clubs. When I finished at The End, I was looking for a new home, fabric asked and I was like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” And I absolutely adore fabric, I look at it as my home, I love the club itself – because it’s just basically brick walls and a great sound system, and that’s what I’m all about. So Bukem In Session was born.

With the mix I really wanted to highlight what I’m doing as a DJ now. I’ve got nothing against how people create a mix, I could’ve sat there and done what a lot of people do: a computer mix, which is great fun as you can do what you can’t do live. But for me personally, I don’t see there being any point in me presenting fabric with a mix to release if it doesn’t represent what people are then going to go and hear me play on a Friday night. The mix is just me on two turntables doing what I do. Secondly, I wanted to represent people on the mix that I am working with on Good Looking right now, who I have a strong belief in what they are doing. So you’ve got people on there like Greg Packer from Australia, Tidal a new guy from Birmingham and a few tracks from Furney. Basically,it’s just about good music. That’s been my ethos since day one.”

Homegame is the yearly music festival curated by the good people over at Fife’s Fence Records. The festival takes place within the quaint little fishing village of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife.

The cottage-indie label, Fence Records, which features on its roster the likes of Pictish Trail, HMS Ginafore, FOUND, Lone Pigeon, James Yorkston, Jon Hopkins and head honcho, King Creosote, have been organising the annual Homegame parties for the last six years with the popularity and reputation growing year on year.

2009 saw special guest appearances at the festival by the likes of Malcolm Middleton, Adem, Karine Polwart, Emma Pollock and De Rosa as well as the ever impressive established Fence Records contingent. Radio Magnetic made the trip East for the festival and were thoroughly charmed, impressed and intoxicated by the end of it. Over the course of the coming months we’ll be bringing you a selection of the festival highlights for your listening pleasure.

First up, Edinburgh-based experimental electro-folk-pop quintet and Radio Magnetic favourites, FOUND. The prolific outfit have been a part of the Fence squad for the last two years now after having being invited to play at the festival back in 2006. With two albums and several EPs in the last two years we predict big things for these lads and hope you dig the set as much as we did. Enjoy!

Friday 10th July sees Dirty Canvas welcomed with open arms into the freshly tweaked soundsystem space of FABRICLIVE’s Room Three

Dirty Canvas fabric Room Three Takeover – 10th July 2009

From humble beginnings in the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Dirty Canvas club night has succinctly and surgically carved its own niche into London’s nightlife.

As the first club night to regularly feature grime music alongside dubstep, garage, bassline and hip hop, they stood as highly vocal pioneers throughout their shows at the heralded regal hollows of the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Since those days they’ve taken their hyper-wiggle formula to the dancefloors of London’s Cargo, Rhythm Factory and 93 Feet East before taking themselves further afield, cross promoting parties in Brighton and Bristol, with Plat Du Jour in Barcelona and taking over The Villa in Berlin back in April of this year.

Friday 10th July sees Dirty Canvas welcomed with open arms into the freshly tweaked soundsystem space of FABRICLIVE’s Room Three. Bringing the proprietor of one of 2009’s most anticipated ‘musical’ dubstep album’s, Silkie, residents Reecha and DJ Magic have irked out one of the most varied bass music lineups you’ll see all month. Alongside Silkie, the Applepips affiliated Brackles will be bringing his sleek, tech infused, super quick mixing to the platters, alongside the dancehall tempered bass pressure of Mumdance and the eclectic selection prowess of Rinse FM’s own Alexander Nut. With MC Badness hosting, the vibe is sure to be on par.

Expect the unexpected.
