Jim Gellatly meets another of his tips for the coming year…

As featured in Jim’s 10 for 2010 (episode 64), Erland & The Carnival really are a delightful musical box of tricks. Their self-titled debut album dips into the past and drags the influences and inspirations screaming into the 21st Century. Live, as Jim witnessed at The Captain’s Rest in Glasgow, “It’s anything but the folk revival you might expect from the outside looking in. The roots may be in folk music, but these guys have unleashed an eclectic indie-rock monster ranging from psychedelic folk through to garage rock and post-Brit Pop.

Perhaps what’s on offer becomes less of a surprise when you realise the rich pedigree of the band. Guitarist Simon Tong first made his name with The Verve, before playing with Blur, Gorillaz and most recently The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Drummer David Nock‘s CV also reads like a Who’s Who of indie rock as a session musician, engineer and programmer including The Cult, The Orb, The Charlatans, The Futureheads and even with Sir Paul McCartney on his The Fireman project.

Fronted by Orkney’s Erland Cooper, plus Andy Harris on keys and bass player Danny Wheeler, Erland & The Carnival are set to take the festivals by storm in the Summer.

In this latest episode of Jim Gellatly’s New Music, the band perform acoustically and select some of the music that has helped forge their sound.
