14.10.09 | Mayer Hawthorne Competition!

mayerhawthorne 450The latest recruit to the estimable underground hip-hop label, Stones Throw, Mayer Hawthorne, will be in Glasgow on Saturday 24 October for an appearance at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut. We’ve got a pair of tickets for the gig for one of you lucky people to get your hands on.

Described as a mixture of Smokey Robinson and J Dilla, Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding current accompaniment ‘the County’. But here he is, the new school soul sensation who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands.

After releasing his debut album, A Strange Arrangement and completing a tour of the U.S. last month, it’s the UK’s turn to fall under the spell courtesy of his selection of heartfelt songs, melodies and vocals, as he visits for a series of gigs. Check out the Mayer’s work below. It’s very, very good.
