After a nice recovery it is now time to reminisce. Aaaaaah.
Sonar = THE best electronic music festival in Europe.
Not just an electronic music festival either, Sonar is constantly evolving and getting bigger by the year. Sonar brings together innovators of visual art, film and audio visual DJ sets. Sonar 2010 brought you the best artists involved in electronic today. Artists like Matthew Herbert, Joy Orbison, Flying Lotus, Roska, Hudson Mohawke, Booka Shade, Caribou, Plastikman, Moodyman, Hot Chip, Caspa, Machine Drum, Fuck Buttons and loads more. In fact, way too many to cram into three days and nights! Tonnes of local talent as well; plus showcases from the likes of the LuckyMe Collective, Soma, Red Bull Music Academy and BBC Introducing. Spoilt for choice to put it mildly.
There was a heavy UK (Scottish) presence at Sonar this year – and it felt good! Watching our very own Jackmaster close the Sonar Dome on the Saturday was pretty special considering house legend, Moodymann had just been on the same stage not long before. Personal knockout highlight on our holiday was the young man, signed to Warp Records, that they call Hudson Mohawke. Oooooft! He blew the roof off Sonar Pub; only thing was there wasn’t a roof! There we all were in our thousands stuck in between two giant industrial buildings on the outskirts of Barcelona city centre all going mental for the groundbreaking UK sound of HudMo‘s FUSE. Looking at him up there – he could only be from one city and that city is Glasgow.
The place is bursting at the seams with new talent from around the globe and record labels in their herds come to share the Sonar love.. Stall after stall of the most up to date technology that literally blows your mind. Sonar Cinema also brought short films like Synth Britannia and Warp 20 (New York) and Warp 20 (London) you can check them out here
This year we also saw a (Back to) The Robot’s exhibition with Sonar’s very own Robot Wars, Robots that play the violin, Robot surveillance and various art workshops from all over Europe and the University of Barcelona.
A good time was had by all (robots and revellers alike) and if you haven’t ever been to Barcelona for Sonar. Go. Next year.
