Taken by Trees, the most recent project of Victoria Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes and vocalist on Peter, Bjorn and John’s indie-pop classic of 2006, Young Folks, arrive in Glasgow on Sunday 13 December to promote their second long player, East is Eden.
You can catch them on their only Scottish date at Mono, with support from Speedmarket Avenue’s Swedish pop goddess Sibille Attar, with her new solo project Little Red Corvette as well as DJ sets from Tracy-Anne Campbell from Camera Obscura, Mr David Brogues and Kris Bladh.
The new Taken By Trees record follows in the footsteps of 2007′s beautiful debut, Open Field and was released on Rough Trade Records back in September.
Recorded in Pakistan, Victoria wanted to make the second long player in a mysterious, relatively uncharted area avoiding the usual clinical studio experience which she has always disliked and found to be an uncreative environment.
The rhythm, drums and flutes of Pakistani music had long captivated Victoria and this, coupled with a deep admiration for one of her favourite singers Abida Parveen and the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, helped her choose Pakistan as the place to record her new album. Another attractive factor was her interest in Sufi musicians who play in order to enter a trance like state, using music to transport themselves to another time and place.
The captivating nature of Taken By Trees’ otherworldly, dreamy pop music has received support and admiration from acts across the board and across the globe. Glasgow’s Camera Obscura and fellow Swedes The Tough Alliance being but two of the diverse and influential supporters of the wonderful work Victoria and sole accompanying musician, Andreas Söderström are creating with the act. Add to this, the production skills of Dan Lissvik, one half of the vastly under-rated but massively influential Swedish duo Studio who pieced the whole project together back in Sweden in the Spring of 2009, and you really have a recipe for delight in store.
We highly recommend this gig and think that TBT are yet another example of the ridiculous amount of talent coming from Scandinavian nations right now from an equally ridiculous spectrum of genres. Hope to see you down there at Mono in King’s Court on Sunday 13 December. Check out full details here.
