Friday 10th July sees Dirty Canvas welcomed with open arms into the freshly tweaked soundsystem space of FABRICLIVE’s Room Three

Dirty Canvas fabric Room Three Takeover – 10th July 2009

From humble beginnings in the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Dirty Canvas club night has succinctly and surgically carved its own niche into London’s nightlife.

As the first club night to regularly feature grime music alongside dubstep, garage, bassline and hip hop, they stood as highly vocal pioneers throughout their shows at the heralded regal hollows of the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Since those days they’ve taken their hyper-wiggle formula to the dancefloors of London’s Cargo, Rhythm Factory and 93 Feet East before taking themselves further afield, cross promoting parties in Brighton and Bristol, with Plat Du Jour in Barcelona and taking over The Villa in Berlin back in April of this year.

Friday 10th July sees Dirty Canvas welcomed with open arms into the freshly tweaked soundsystem space of FABRICLIVE’s Room Three. Bringing the proprietor of one of 2009’s most anticipated ‘musical’ dubstep album’s, Silkie, residents Reecha and DJ Magic have irked out one of the most varied bass music lineups you’ll see all month. Alongside Silkie, the Applepips affiliated Brackles will be bringing his sleek, tech infused, super quick mixing to the platters, alongside the dancehall tempered bass pressure of Mumdance and the eclectic selection prowess of Rinse FM’s own Alexander Nut. With MC Badness hosting, the vibe is sure to be on par.

Expect the unexpected.

Toddla played at Kinky Afro, at the Sub Club in Glasgow, in January 2008. His bumping bass headline set blends the beats and riddims that make this young man one of the DJs and producers of the moment.

A lanky streak of gabbling enthusiasm, through 2008, Toddla’s Fill Up Mi Portion, Soundtape Killin’ and Manabadman singles, not to mention his brilliant Ghettoblaster No.1 mixtape download, announced him as British dance music’s brightest new talent.

Toddla T is pictured here with Serocee (photo taken from his MySpace profile). His influences – that “clangy Sheffield electronic sound” first minted by Cabaret Voltaire; local speed garage variant, bassline; early Warp Records’ bleep techno – may be peculiarly South Yorkshire, but Britain hasn’t heard party music this raw and vibrant since early Basement Jaxx. “I was conscious people might find it a bit ‘aggro’,” says Toddla. “But when I DJ, there’s so many girls into it. It’s mad. I thought I made boy music, but no, luckily.”

He’s coming back to Kinky Afro on Friday 29th May 2009.

What's in Sheffield? Not much except grey clouds, rain and bus stops but Diplo managed to dig deep and find the cities newest dance craze Niche. DJ Bok Bok takes us on tour of the scene in this mix.

What’s in Sheffield? I was only there once but it was pretty miserable, like always grey clouds and bus stops and mud puddles.

But, it does have some music history.. from 80′s synth pop – Heaven 17, Thompson Twins, and Cabaret Voltair to Autechre and now the Arctic Monkeyfaces.. but there’s some mad scene that’s been comin up there called niche – named after a nightclub that recently closed.. its kinda speed garage – sped up more and run through some dumb basslines! if you’ve been to UK in the last year – you’ve heard T2 – heartbroken- a quintessential track from that scenes sound… its all about 140 bpms and has a 4/4 and pretty much bangs! my dudes Bok Bok and Manara (aka Faggatronix – that name kills me) just put it down with what’s what in the niche/bassline set right now..

Check em out (they are not from sheffield btw)
