Frost and Fire bring Glasgow's Platform a unique night of traditional and alternative folk music with Mary Hampton, Alasdair Roberts and Serious Sam Barrett.

The Radio Magnetic blog brings you the latest gigs, clubs, competitions and music news from throughout the UK and worldwide.

Frost and Fire have brought Glasgow some of the best UK acoustic and alternative folk music there is and on 4 May curator Howie Reeve brings another brilliant selection of contemporary folk acts to Platform in Glasgow.

Mary Hampton is an English singer songwriter whose style is rooted in traditional folk, with elements of turn-of-the-century European chamber music. Whether performing alone with a guitar or backed by her full band the Mary Hampton Cotillion, her haunting voice and inventiveness have allowed her to create some of the most original and refreshing folk records around.

Glasgow based folk musician Alasdair Roberts is also performing at the event. His avant garde take on folk music has gained him fans around the world and his extensive catalog of recordings has breathed a new life into traditional folk music.

Serious Sam Barrett is an up and coming Yorkshire musician who performs his own mix of blues, folk and country music. His unique style sets him apart from anyone else in the UK and his natural smooth voice and romantic love songs engage with almost everyone.

This will be a rare night of folk music performances and one not to be missed. Tickets are £7.50 and available from the Platform Box Office and Tickets Scotland.

Listen online, stream and download this exclusive Live Circuit Session from Tinariwen recorded by us live at The Arches in Glasgow from back in 2007.

The quite awesome UK based, Malian blues rock outfit, Tinariwen return to Glasgow in 2012 to play at Oran Mor and we urge you to get a ticket. Their latest album, Tassili released earlier this year is amongst the best LPs they’ve made, we think.

Given their excellent new album and their upcoming gig in Glasgow next year we thought it was about time we unearthed this classic live recording we made back in 2007 at what was a truly memorable evening of music at The Arches.

Enjoy.

Listen online, stream and download the monthly Wild Combination podcast on Radio Magnetic. Presented by one of Glasgow’s finest DJs, David Barbarossa.

This months Wild Combination comes to you a little late due to your hosts ill health. DB couldn’t manage carrying a whole bag of large records to the studio, so he used that to his advantage and turned in a selection of 7inch dancefloor (and home listening) favourites.

Leaning into the microphone was a bit of a stretch too, so it’s very much a case of less talk, more rock (or in this case more Euro Funk, Afro Beat, Psychsploiation & other exotic treasures).

No bad back next month. Back next month, no bad.

A number of possible superstitious origins for customs associated with birthday celebrations have been suggested. It was feared that evil spirits were particularly attracted to people on their birthdays and to protect them, they would be visited by friends and family who would bring good thoughts and best wishes.

This special edition of the AudioVaVafesto celebrates the 10 year anniversary of our friends over at Radio Magnetic.
Listen online, stream and download the We Can Still Picnic radio show every month on Radio Magnetic.

WCSP is a communications and design company operating across multiple platforms. Born in Glasgow on the tenth day of October 2010 or 10/10/10 if you prefer.

WE CAN STILL PICNIC is a brand new trick in town, a (very) loose collective of artists, musicians, writers, provocateurs, poets, aesthetes, facilitators… The stated aim is to stimulate / manipulate / agitate and social interaction is high on the agenda… all uptight and designed to thrill.

Various nights occur, including a club at Mono a sister club at the Admiral, called Loose Lips, plus our own record label. We also distribute We Can Still Picnic pamphlets which feature musings on everything from Yves Klein to Sun Ra to Saul Bass to Boards of Canada.

So anyway without further ado, welcome to Episode One with WCSP members Bjorn Sandberg, Andy Power and Radio Magnetic‘s Andy McColgan. A few teething problems but we got there. More from We Can Still Picnic very soon too. Hope you enjoy it.
