Time for another Fabric Session. This time round, to mark the release of Fabriclive 52, here's Zero T's 60 minute radio session. It features tunes from the likes of Total Science, Noisia, Pariah, Joy Orbison and more.

Time for another Fabric Session. This time round, to mark the release of Fabriclive 52, here’s Zero T’s 60 minute radio session. It features tunes from the likes of Total Science, Noisia, Pariah, Joy Orbison and more.

My main plan for this year is to branch out into other music worlds. I’m currently working on a hip-hop, soul project that will be aimed at commercial release. The band is called The Jones’s. It is a labour of love that I’m trying to launch in September. The sound involves a lot of samples and the use of some live players; everything from early 80s sleaze funk to 90s hip hop. It’s the music that makes me tick on a personal level; the music I listened to before drum n’ bass. The fact that I do play a lot of different styles is starting to filter out to the general populous.

Here in the UK, strict genres and the rigidity of DJing are both melting away. Now it’s normal for me to switch tempos in a D&B set, and it’s just as normal for Skream and Benga to play a D&B tune – which is healthy. Hopefully it’s going to turn back into just UK bass music, with tempos being flexible. It really opens you up as a DJ when you can play a good tune at the right time, instead of being obsessed with double drops and stupid timings. That’s what I was trying to do with the mix: to show my sets at a peak time show, but also get really eclectic in the mix later on – with dubstep and old garage classics (such as Wookie’s ‘Little Man’), then some dub and straight up techno, finishing on some jacking Chicago-style house. At the very end there’s this new crew local to my adopted home (N8), it’s basically a hip hop tune that switches into something a bit like Roni Size’s ‘Music Box,’ with twinkly Rhodes and cosmic surfer samples.

I wanted to give an honest representation of what a Zero T set is like, to play tunes that I genuinely love. I also wanted for it to be a CD for people that aren’t into drum & bass. It goes from dark, to more musical, to vocal, to properly minimal and deep stuff. I’ve managed to get all the artists I wanted, who are either heroes of mine or the current people to watch. Some of the tracks will only appear on the CD, they’ll never appear anywhere else – lots of exclusives.

Our latest offering from the good people at the world renowned Fabric comes courtesy of Martijn Deijkers, AKA Martyn. To accompany the release of Fabric 50 here’s his exclusive 60 min radio mix for your enjoyment.

“I’ve been buying music for as long as I can remember really, as soon as I got a weekly allowance I spent it on 7” singles and albums. When I was studying I went clubbing a lot and I just got drawn to the music, really. In the early 90s, I heard Chicago house and Detroit techno for the first time in a club; from then onwards that was kind of my thing, but I kept following bands as well, so for me not all music was electronic. I never thought I would play a role in music myself.

When it came to house and techno I loved it. All the DJs that I saw playing were older, so I could appreciate the music as a follower but it wasn’t my generation. When I encountered drum & bass around 94/95, it made a huge impression on me, and I just felt at home in that style; I was like, ‘This is my generation, so maybe I can play some sort of part in this.’ So I started buying more and more music and that’s when it started to kick off. I started DJing, and because no-one wants to book you when you’re just starting out, I started throwing my own events.

Straight after the official Fabric 50 mix CD I’m starting my second album. That’s going to be my main thing for next year and obviously there’s going to be smaller projects here and there and remixes and who knows what – I’ll just take it as it comes.

I’ve been doing some things for a movie director in Holland, wrote music for him. We’re doing a short movie in January and who knows what comes after that – i’m excited about it, but let’s talk when there is actually something to talk about!”

Drum and bass pioneer and Good Looking Records label boss, LTJ Bukem is at the helm for the latest Fabric mix.

Drum and bass pioneer and Good Looking Records label boss, LTJ Bukem is at the helm for the latest Fabric mix.

“As a kid, over the course of a couple of years I got heavily into jazz, discovering Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Lonnie Liston Smith, all those guys that I now idolise and have collected ever since, I was hooked. Nigel changed my whole perception of music and developed my love for it at the same time; the first tune that he played me was ‘Lenore’ by Chick Corea and that has stuck with me right to this day.

I started a soundsystem called Sunshine back in the early 80s and me and a group of guys would do house parties, buy the music and do the usual soundsystem thing. A few years later I met a guy called Paul Waller in Blackmarket, and he said “Do you know anyone that plays the piano?” I told him I did and he said, “Well, listen man, we’re doing this remix and I work for Nellee Hooper (of Soul II Soul). Come down to the studio, we need some keyboards.” So I went down there, and from just exploring the idea of wanting to be a DJ. The first track I ever made was ‘Logical Progression’ in 1990. It was a transitional period musically, but ‘Logical Progression’ was at a time when drum & bass wasn’t really there – so it was effectively, the beginning of drum & bass. In the early 1990s Good Looking Records got set up too.

Progression Sessions must be one of the longest running residency concepts in the scene. It started in 94/95 and it’s still going in 2009. We did Ministry for a few years, we did The End for a few years, we did Shepherds Bush Empire and various other clubs. When I finished at The End, I was looking for a new home, fabric asked and I was like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” And I absolutely adore fabric, I look at it as my home, I love the club itself – because it’s just basically brick walls and a great sound system, and that’s what I’m all about. So Bukem In Session was born.

With the mix I really wanted to highlight what I’m doing as a DJ now. I’ve got nothing against how people create a mix, I could’ve sat there and done what a lot of people do: a computer mix, which is great fun as you can do what you can’t do live. But for me personally, I don’t see there being any point in me presenting fabric with a mix to release if it doesn’t represent what people are then going to go and hear me play on a Friday night. The mix is just me on two turntables doing what I do. Secondly, I wanted to represent people on the mix that I am working with on Good Looking right now, who I have a strong belief in what they are doing. So you’ve got people on there like Greg Packer from Australia, Tidal a new guy from Birmingham and a few tracks from Furney. Basically,it’s just about good music. That’s been my ethos since day one.”

Fabric release Fabriclive. 44 this month with undoubtedly one of the most refreshing Drum and Bass mixes we’ve heard for a long time.

WIN TICKETS TO THE LAUNCH PARTY HERE

It’s no secret that I personally have fallen out of favour with the genre due to it’s sudden lack of progression and London / Bristol centric scene which seems to alienate much of the UK from being part of the music many of us loved throwing shapes to in the past.

However, Commix duo George Levings and Guy Brewer have seriously reinvigorated my interest in the genre and I’m sure they’ll do the same for others out there in the same situation.

“To be honest, a lot of the drum & bass scene depresses us at the moment; the whole state of the large majority of the scene is quite depressing. In fact, we’d like to say it’s almost completely removed from what we do.”

“We’re really influenced by tech housey stuff, and I suppose minimal stuff as well. On the minimal side of things Troy Pierce, Mathew Jonson; on the housier side of things- Steve Bug, obviously. Steve Bug can play for hours and he doesn’t really do much, but it’s just so down the same line of funky techno. And we really aspire to that in drum & bass – not really narrow-minded or just one-levelled, but with a bit of experimentation in it.”

This way of thinking is demonstrated perfectly on FABRICLIVE 44; the mix ebbs and flows effortlessly, swerving unnecessary frills or gimmicks entirely, it is measured and precise. Commix have put together a selection of tracks that takes any listener – whether ardent drum & bass heads or curious techno enthusiasts with an adventurous streak – on a journey through the studios of the deepest and most innovative producers in D&B.

“Creating a mix is almost like a jigsaw puzzle – there were a couple of tracks we knew would go at the beginning of the mix, a couple we knew would go at the end, and slightly harder tracks that would fill in the gaps. It’s quite exciting because we were able to include new, key tracks that we play in our sets, but for us it was also important to showcase some older material that has really influenced us. Listening to this mix, we hear what drum & bass was when it started out – we hope to enlighten people about where it came from.”

Dougal’s new year’s resolution, at least the one he actually intends to stick to, involves a new format for his Magnetism show.

Incorporating clips from TV, radio, soundtracks and other media from the archives, all with some personal connection, the new show style also includes spoken word, private confessions, anonymous messages and an eclectic selection of new music, with a couple of classics sneaking in there somewhere too. This episode feature’s a few word’s from Dougal’s canine namesake and an extract from his all time favourite radio series too.

Let him know what you think of the new show by posting comments on this page.
