Listen online, stream and download the Ionise Dubcast on Radio Magnetic for the best classic and contemporary dub and reggae music.

Hard to believe but it’s true. The less than prolific One Louder have only gone and done it again. Episode 2 of Ionise Dubcast has arrived and unsurprisingly features the finest deep reggae and heavy dub.

The Ionise Dubcast series is still getting into it’s groove but Episode 2 is a real tonic for the ears with devastating dub from the likes of Mikey Dread and The Aggrovators sitting alongside lush vocal tracks by The Chosen Few and The Congos.

Get it on and turn it up. You owe it to yourself.

As RM's 10th year broadcasting cutting edge specialist music programmes draws to a close the One Louder DJs have decided to help them celebrate by giving the Ionise show a bit of a make-over.

As Radio Magnetic‘s 10th year broadcasting cutting edge specialist music programmes draws to a close the One Louder DJs have decided to help them celebrate by giving the Ionise show a bit of a make-over.

Over the last 10 years the broadcasting industry has changed dramatically and nowadays, in this modern ultra-connected digital age, finding some audio entertainment that is actually satisfying and listener friendly is no longer the painful and time consuming task that it used to be.

It is certainly an exciting time for broadcasters and listeners alike and it is this that has inspired the One Louder DJs to switch things up a bit.

The new direction see them serving up a series of irregular and inconsistent mixes of the finest reggae and dub influenced music designed specifically for your headphones. The idea is not to take up too much of your time and to keep you interested and entertained while they have your attention.

Episode One sees Davie Kelly lay down an iPod friendly mix of some seriously bass heavy low slung dub and reggae. So plug yourself in, turn it up to eleven and give your ears a treat.

Also featuring during the course of the evening is Hollie ‘daughter of Sex Pistols Paul’ Cook, fresh from working with Prince Fatty on her self-titled debut album earlier this year, plus additional tunes from Horseman and Mutant Hi-Fi. Their 1979 album Live At The Counter Eurovision 79, featured classic songs Ghetto Of The City, Sodom and Gomorra and Man Kind was championed by John Peel and as well as helping to bring UK roots reggae to a wider audience in the UK is regarded as a true classic amongst the majority of reggae aficionados. Again, tickets can be bought from www.ticketweb.co.uk or www.tickets-scotland.com and cost £15.

Recently collaborating with hip-hop MC Rodney P, Specials front man Terry Hall and scratch master DJ Stix you’re in for a fantastic night with these legendary party starters.
Here's the first DJ set of the evening from our 10th Birthday Party at the Big Chill House. We were delighted to be asked to play the gig as part of Mixcloud's monthly residency and had a fantastic time.

Live DJ mixes from the Radio Magnetic 10th Birthday Bash at the Big Chill House in London. Hosted in collaboration with Mixcloud.com.

We were invited by the lovely people at Mixcloud HQ to come down and play at their monthly residency at the Big Chill House, King’s Cross as part of our tenth birthday celebrations. We did just that and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who came down to enjoy a truly memorable evening of great music and partying. It was a lot of fun.

Here’s the first DJ set of the evening. Station manager, Andy McColgan, who got things started nicely with a spot of reggae and gospel-tinged soul before moving onto more disco-floor territory via a trio of Scottish indie-dance masterpieces. Some obscure tunes, many not so obscure… all seemed to go down well though and got the party started in fine style. There were even some people dancing and it was quite early…

Keep an eye on: radiomagnetic.com/10years for the rest of the sets from the night in the coming days. Davie Kelly, S-Type, Dougal Perman and Mixcloud‘s Nikhil and Nico.

And have a look and check out some of Andy’s irregularly produced and presented, Relative Frequency shows on Radio Magnetic too if you like the sound if this sort of stuff.

Enjoy.

Astatke brings his Ethio-Jazz, a mix of latin rhythms, Ethiopian music, jazz, pop, reggae, elements of instrument-based disco and dance music with lots of funk, to Glasgow on the 30th June.

The Radio Magnetic blog brings you the latest gigs, clubs, festivals and music news from throughout the UK and worldwide.

Mulatu Astatke is acknowledged as the father of Ethio Jazz, a melding of latin rhythms, traditional Ethiopian music, jazz, pop, reggae, elements of instrument-based disco and African dance music with lots and lots of funk. Sounds pretty good, eh? We think so, and highly recommend his gig as part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival on Thursday 30 June.

Mulatu was musically trained in London, New York and Boston where he was the first African student at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After a brief period recording in New York he returned to Ethiopia where he found Addis Ababa had flourished into a cosmopolitan and vibrant city. Here he immersed himself in the music scene combining his newly discovered knowledge of jazz with the traditional Ethiopian melodies of his formative years.

Largely unknown in the west, this changed with the release of Ethiopiques 4 on French label, Buda Musiques which showcased his prodigious and expansive talents. His music was used as the score for Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers thereby bringing Mulatu’s music to a new generation of music fans. The ever-impressive Strut Records have also aided in the recent resurgence of interest in the work of Mulatu Astatke, with the releases of a handful of wonderful compilations showcasing the pioneering music he has made, as a solo artist as well as with a range of superb musicians including The Heliocentrics, as well as a brand new LP in 2010, entitled Mulatu Steps Ahead. The title says it all for us but come and see him for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Mulatu Astatke plays a very special gig at Platform, in Glasgow, as part of the 2011 Glasgow Jazz Festival on Thursday 30 June.

Return buses on the night from Mono Bar – tickets only £4 from Monorail or on the bus.

For the gig, local links and under 16′s £10. Normal tickets £14.
