The Radio Magnetic blog brings you the latest gigs, clubs, festivals and music news from throughout the UK and worldwide.

We’ve been excitedly following the Scottish Album of the Year Award since it was announced last month. Just this week, a panel of judges met and decided on just ten shortlisted albums from the longlist of 20 Scottish albums, all released in 2011. The winning album will be announced at an awards ceremony at Glasgow Film City on Tuesday 19th June, where each of the shortlisted acts will receive a £1,000 prize, and one luck winner will pocket the sizeable £20,000 award. All ten shortlisted finalists will receive an artwork from the winner of a unique SAY Award art commission. The art commission, will be created by graduates from one of Scotland’s art schools.
In alphabetical order, the shortlisted nominees are:

Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat “Everything’s Getting Older”

Conquering Animal Sound “Kammerspiel”

Happy Particles “Under Sleeping Waves”

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins “Diamond Mine”

Mogwai “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will”

Mungo’s Hi Fi “Forward Ever”

Remember Remember “The Quickening”

Rustie “Glass Swords”

Tommy Smith “Karma”

Twin Atlantic “Free” (public vote winners)

More than 9,000 votes were received online and via the SAY award app which saw the populist act join the shortlist alongside newcomers like Conquering Animal Sound and Happy Particles.

Beacons Festival: 17 – 19 August, 2012

If you like the sound of spending your weekend listening to great music with the Yorkshire Dales providing the backdrop, then Beacons Festival 2012 should be top of your to do list this summer. Martin Moffat explains why it’s a must.

The intimate, boutique music and art festival, situated in the conveniently named Funkirk Estate, is set to play host to a impressive lineup of artists that belies the festivals size. For such a small festival, Beacons is jam packed with artists who will undoubtedly make the pocket friendly entrance fee worth every penny.

Here’s our top 10 (yes 10) reasons why you should go to Beacons Festival this year.

Wild Beasts – Headlining Saturday night at Beacons, the Mercury Prize nominated band will no doubt put on one hell of a show. The release of their third album Smother on Domino Records last year has propelled the band to new heights including embarking on a world tour seeing them play across America, Europe and Australia. Not a bad follow up to their Mercury Prize nominated album Two dancers (which missed out on the award to the XX) if you ask us.

Roots Manuva- UK Hip Hop don Roots Manuva is a man who should need very little introduction. The London born hip hop veteran of Witness (1 Hope) fame has been about for over 15 years with eight studio albums under his belt. It’s safe to say his set should be all killer.

Factory Floor – This London based trio have been causing quite a stir since their first release in 2008. Their sound has been described as “something akin to being in a playpit, with Kraftwerk, Nico, Drexciya and Dopplereffekt all kicking the sand up in your face.” Intrigued? You should be.

Maya Jane Coles - If like us you are sad enough to spend the majority of your day hunched over a laptop trawling the internet for good music then you will undoubtedly have heard of Maya Jane Coles. If you are lucky enough to have a life that lets you socialise with real people and go out to clubs, you will still have heard of MJC. Not content with topping the best of lists for almost every self respecting electronic music publication around last year, the young London based producer has been all over the UK and Europe destroying clubs with her DJ sets and productions. Keep your eyes peeled for her forthcoming entry to the DJ Kicks series.

Pearson Sound - David Kennedy aka Pearson Sound (formerly Ramadanman) is an artist who has been on the forefront of British electronic music for some time now. One third of the essential Hessle Audio imprint (alongside Ben UFO and Pangaea) this man is in a league of his own. With an excellent Fabric Live mix under his belt, alongside a slew of ridiculously on point productions and remixes this man cannot be fucked with. Oh did I forget to mention this man can DJ like the best of them? Well he can.

Lunice – Lunice is a Boss, plain and simple. This Canadian has been heralded as the future of Hip Hop by some and one of the baddest mother-fuckers alive by others. Releases on LuckyMe, Mad Decent and Young Turks have made this man one of the most sought after producers around at the moment and his live shows are simply indescribable. Seriously, I’m not just saying that for hype, if you haven’t seen this man live you won’t understand. Check out his Boiler Room Performances and you will see what I mean.

Jessie Ware – There are a lot of things I cold write about Jessie Ware, although the majority of them could not be printed in any publications without a parental guidance label slapped across the front of it. What I can say is that Jessie Ware is beautiful and massively talented. If you don’t believe me check out the tracks she has featured on, working with artists like SBTRKT, Joker and Sampha. Her single, Running, was recently given the remix treatment by Disclosure creating one of the biggest tracks of the year so far, oh and she has an album due to drop this summer on PMR. I think that should be enough.

Bok Bok - Night Slugs label boss and all round badman DJ, Bok Bok is nothing short of a club weapon. Alongside his parter in crime L-Vis 1990, this man has been controlling dance floors for the last few years with his Night Slugs label dropping anthems from the likes of Girl Unit, Jacques Greene, Mosca and L-vis 1990. With a new series of releases on the way with the Club Constructions series Bok Bok is sure to be wreaking havoc in a dance near you for some time to come.

XXXY – Manchester’s Rupert Taylor is one of the finest producers in the game at the moment. The past year has seen him releases tracks on labels such as Fortified Audio, All City and Ten Thousand Yen. His EP You Always Start It/Ordinary Things was one of our favourites of last year and his forthcoming release Everything/ I Know this Can’t Be Love on Well Rounded Records later this month is sure to provide two of the biggest tracks of the summer.

Jam City – Londoner Jack Latham has been releasing a steady stream of quality releases on Night Slugs and has an album on the way which is due for release in May. His releases have caused quite a stir in the music world incorporating elements of Grime, Dubstep and House to deadly effect. His recent single, The Courts, is no exception and features and awesome video to boot.

Full Line up;

WILD BEASTS / PATRICK WOLF / ROOTS MANUVA / JUNIOR BOYS / GHOSTPOET / ERRORS / JESSIE WARE / FRANKIE & THE HEARTSTRINGS / MAYA JANE COLES / FACTORY FLOOR / PEARSON SOUND / CASS MCCOMBS / WILLY MASON / D/R/U/G/S / PEAKING LIGHTS / XXXY / KWES / OUTFIT / STAR SLINGER / CLOCK OPERA / LUNICE / SUBMOTION ORCHESTRA / BOK BOK / 2:54 / JAM CITY / KING KRULE / MAZES / STILL CORNERS / STAY+ / GROSS MAGIC / BOS ANGELES / GRASS HOUSE / ARTHUR BEATRICE / HOOKWORMS / THE WAVE PICTURES / AU PALAIS

A very small number of early birds tickets are left at just £60 for the weekend, including camping (£55 for students). Once these have gone there will be a batch at £74.50 and then full price tickets will be at £84.50.

Tickets are available to purchase from: The Beacons Festival website (below), HMV, Seetickets (below), Resident Advisor, Leedstickets.com, Jumbo Records and Crash Records.

The excellent, Jai Paul returns to give our speakers a work out with Jasmine on XL Recordings. check it out now on SoundCloud.

The Radio Magnetic blog brings you the latest gigs, clubs, festivals and music news from throughout the UK and worldwide.

Jai Paul returns to give our speakers a work out with Jasmine on XL Recordings.

It’s a fact of todays music industry that you can become a success over night. The constant hype machine that is the internet can propel an artist to dizzying heights faster than you can say ‘premature’. All it takes is the right blog to say the right thing and before you know it you are the best thing since Lana Del Rey.

Jai Paul is an example of this hype in action. When BTSTU was released in 2010 the blogs went wild, and with good reason. The track was an impressive debut that grabbed listeners by the ears, forcing them to bob their heads in a neck endangering motion that would make Busta Rhymes proud.

The track was then picked up by XL with BTSTU (Edit) seeing a proper release in April 2011. It has been one year (almost to the day) since then and not much has been heard from Mr Paul, musical or otherwise. Usually by this point some juicy information from his personal life would have reached the public domain, (perhaps he used to work on the fish counter in a Morrisons in Blackpool?) but while BTSTU stayed firmly overground, Jai Paul appeared to go underground leaving many wondering if he would ever release any new music. That was until last Friday when Jasmine appeared on Jai’s Soundcloud, since then the track has had almost 250,000 listens.

Jasmine is another impressive show of Jai Paul’s skills as a producer/singer and will no doubt prove to many that the hype train that left the station back in 2010 is now well on course for the young Londoner. The fact that BTSU gained support from big names like Beyonce and Drake suggests that mainstream success should be no problem for the elusive artist. His newest offering is off to just as strong a start grabbing the attention of the likes of Mount Kimbie who posted on their twitter about the track ‘Love it when someone just nails it.’.

With such wide ranging support for an artist who has only released one song I think it’s safe to say I’m not the only one who can’t wait for his album to drop.

Check out Jai Paul’s Jasmine on Soundcloud.
