Listen online, stream and download the Ionise Dubcast on Radio Magnetic for the best classic and contemporary dub and reggae music.

Hard to believe but it’s true. The less than prolific One Louder have only gone and done it again. Episode 2 of Ionise Dubcast has arrived and unsurprisingly features the finest deep reggae and heavy dub.

The Ionise Dubcast series is still getting into it’s groove but Episode 2 is a real tonic for the ears with devastating dub from the likes of Mikey Dread and The Aggrovators sitting alongside lush vocal tracks by The Chosen Few and The Congos.

Get it on and turn it up. You owe it to yourself.

As RM's 10th year broadcasting cutting edge specialist music programmes draws to a close the One Louder DJs have decided to help them celebrate by giving the Ionise show a bit of a make-over.

As Radio Magnetic‘s 10th year broadcasting cutting edge specialist music programmes draws to a close the One Louder DJs have decided to help them celebrate by giving the Ionise show a bit of a make-over.

Over the last 10 years the broadcasting industry has changed dramatically and nowadays, in this modern ultra-connected digital age, finding some audio entertainment that is actually satisfying and listener friendly is no longer the painful and time consuming task that it used to be.

It is certainly an exciting time for broadcasters and listeners alike and it is this that has inspired the One Louder DJs to switch things up a bit.

The new direction see them serving up a series of irregular and inconsistent mixes of the finest reggae and dub influenced music designed specifically for your headphones. The idea is not to take up too much of your time and to keep you interested and entertained while they have your attention.

Episode One sees Davie Kelly lay down an iPod friendly mix of some seriously bass heavy low slung dub and reggae. So plug yourself in, turn it up to eleven and give your ears a treat.

This autumn the Afro Caribbean Centre host a string of quality reggae gigs. Prince Fatty, Misty in Roots and the Dub Pistols over the next three weeks.

The Radio Magnetic blog brings you the latest gigs, clubs, festivals and music news from throughout the UK and worldwide.

This autumn the outstanding Afro Caribbean Centre at 66 Osbourne Street will be hosting a string of live reggae music organised by JA live and ACC 2014. So get your skanking shoes on and get along.

First up this Friday 30 September at 8pm a freshers reggae party with an illustrious line up featuring Prince Fatty Soundsystem, Hollie Cook, Horseman and Mutant Hi-Fi. Prince Fatty named in honour of the late great King Tubby is a true champion in the dub arena who has worked with many legends of the reggae scene including Gregory Isaacs and Junior Murvin. He’ll be bringing his dub heavy sound system to the dancefloor. Also featuring during the course of the evening is Hollie ‘daughter of Sex Pistols Paul’ Cook, fresh from working with Prince Fatty on her self-titled debut album earlier this year, plus additional tunes from Horseman and Mutant Hi-Fi. Tickets are £5 and can be bought on the door or at www.ticketweb.com.

Next up are UK reggae legends Misty In Roots on Friday the 7 October at 8pm. Misty In Roots have been together for a staggering 40 years and are still pumping out the same morally conscious roots reggae sound they helped pioneer in the 70s with the Rock Against Racism movement. Their 1979 album Live At The Counter Eurovision 79, featured classic songs Ghetto Of The City, Sodom and Gomorra and Man Kind was championed by John Peel and as well as helping to bring UK roots reggae to a wider audience in the UK is regarded as a true classic amongst the majority of reggae aficionados. Again, tickets can be bought from www.ticketweb.co.uk or www.tickets-scotland.com and cost £15.

Concluding the autumn season of quality reggae gigs at the Afro Caribbean Centre are Barry Ashworth’s Dub Pistols on Saturday 8 October at 8pm. Consistently defying genre classifications from their early singles on Concrete Records to their Six Million Ways To Live LP, Dub Pistols have never shied away from the label of innovators within the UK’s dance music scene. Recently collaborating with hip-hop MC Rodney P, Specials front man Terry Hall and scratch master DJ Stix you’re in for a fantastic night with these legendary party starters. Tickets cost £8 for early birds and £10 thereafter, they can purchased from either www.ticketweb.co.uk or www.tickets-scotland.com.

Here's the first DJ set of the evening from our 10th Birthday Party at the Big Chill House. We were delighted to be asked to play the gig as part of Mixcloud's monthly residency and had a fantastic time.

Live DJ mixes from the Radio Magnetic 10th Birthday Bash at the Big Chill House in London. Hosted in collaboration with Mixcloud.com.

We were invited by the lovely people at Mixcloud HQ to come down and play at their monthly residency at the Big Chill House, King’s Cross as part of our tenth birthday celebrations. We did just that and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who came down to enjoy a truly memorable evening of great music and partying. It was a lot of fun.

Here’s the first DJ set of the evening. Station manager, Andy McColgan, who got things started nicely with a spot of reggae and gospel-tinged soul before moving onto more disco-floor territory via a trio of Scottish indie-dance masterpieces. Some obscure tunes, many not so obscure… all seemed to go down well though and got the party started in fine style. There were even some people dancing and it was quite early…

Keep an eye on: radiomagnetic.com/10years for the rest of the sets from the night in the coming days. Davie Kelly, S-Type, Dougal Perman and Mixcloud‘s Nikhil and Nico.

And have a look and check out some of Andy’s irregularly produced and presented, Relative Frequency shows on Radio Magnetic too if you like the sound if this sort of stuff.

Enjoy.

Mulatu Astatke is acknowledged as the father of Ethio Jazz, a melding of latin rhythms, traditional Ethiopian music, jazz, pop, reggae, elements of instrument-based disco and African dance music with lots and lots of funk. Sounds pretty good, eh? We think so, and highly recommend his gig as part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival on Thursday 30 June.

Mulatu was musically trained in London, New York and Boston where he was the first African student at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After a brief period recording in New York he returned to Ethiopia where he found Addis Ababa had flourished into a cosmopolitan and vibrant city. Here he immersed himself in the music scene combining his newly discovered knowledge of jazz with the traditional Ethiopian melodies of his formative years.

Largely unknown in the west, this changed with the release of Ethiopiques 4 on French label, Buda Musiques which showcased his prodigious and expansive talents. His music was used as the score for Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers thereby bringing Mulatu’s music to a new generation of music fans. The ever-impressive Strut Records have also aided in the recent resurgence of interest in the work of Mulatu Astatke, with the releases of a handful of wonderful compilations showcasing the pioneering music he has made, as a solo artist as well as with a range of superb musicians including The Heliocentrics, as well as a brand new LP in 2010, entitled Mulatu Steps Ahead. The title says it all for us but come and see him for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Mulatu Astatke plays a very special gig at Platform, in Glasgow, as part of the 2011 Glasgow Jazz Festival on Thursday 30 June.

Mr Spudd is a stalwart of the underground electronic music scene in Glasgow. Co-founder and resident of the legendary Radar night, Mr Spudd DJs all over the place and is as lightly to be heard playing at an outdoor party in a remote ruined castle as he is a music festival, club or bar. An iconoclastic DJ with esoteric eclectic tastes, Mr Spudd compiled this selection especially for Radio Magnetic as part of our tenth anniversary celebration series.

It’s been way too long since Ionise last brought their dub vibes to Radio Magnetic but you’ll be glad to hear that the BBC succeeded where others failed and provided the One Louder crew with some much needed inspiration.

Here’s The Niallist’s 100 minute compilation of his favourite tunes of the last 12 months.

There’s a couple of exclusives on here, and a fair bit of Glasgow based music, mixed up with some of the bigger releases of 2010 I have enjoyed, and some random stuff that has come my way.

It wasn’t intentional but there’s quite a lot of synths on this, from the cold and discordant to the warm and lush. Oh I do love synthesizers! I’m bringing synth back for this next decade people. There’s also a smattering of hip hop, reggae, punk and a male voice choir for good measure.

A relatively freaky tricky treaty for you with this installment. The fourth and by far the strangest mix to date. As ever, the most pleasing old and new music heard in recent weeks feature; frequently with a relatively ugly undercurrent of terror-stricken torment.

In keeping with the oft-overlooked notion of good old fashioned fun and also timed to coincide with the scariest event on the yearly calendar, here’s my Halloween special mix.

We kick off with NY’s No Wave electronic pioneers, Suicide‘s ghostly tune from their 1977 eponymous debut, devils come courtesy of Joakim and Scratch Perry , Dogs of War provide the pirates, zombies are more Fela Kuti‘s bag and Sexual Harrassment need a freak. Some ridiculous hip-hop halloween edit of Morrissey (with whom the responsibility for this lies I have no idea), Capracara, Supermax, Ariel Pink and John Cooper Clarke are all in town this week too.

Spooking hell! Time to get off your monkey nut.
